Title IX Protects Transgender Students, Education Dept. Says

2021

The Education Department says that transgender students are protected under Title IX, a law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded schools. Secretary of Education Miguel A. Cardona said: “Students cannot be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or their gender identity.” The ruling was based on a Supreme Court ruling last year that said protections in the Civil Rights Act against discrimination in the workplace extended to gay and transgender people.
