A permanent resident is an immigrant who has obtained
permission by the
government to stay and work in the country. Most often the process
requires an immigrant to be sponsored by a relative or an
employer. Permanent residents do not have the same rights as citizens,
most notably the right to vote, and they can be deported under certain circumstances. The
card issued to permanent residents is colloquially called a green card.
