The lowest amount a worker can legally be paid per hour, as
decided by Congress. The federal minimum wage is included in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which also regulates
over-time pay and includes provisions on child labor and equal pay. States can
set lower minimum wages for some jobs that are not covered by the federal rate,
or they can set an overall higher minimum wage.
