Associate Justice of the Supreme Court
Eight Associate Justices serve on the Supreme Court alongside the Chief Justice. The Supreme Court is a court of limited jurisidiction and can therefore hear only those types of cases specified by the Constitution. As a general rule, if four of the nine Justices agree to hear a case, it will be listed on the Court’s docket and the parties will submit written arguments (briefs) and present oral arguments to the Court. All nine members are appointed to their position by the President for a life term (subject only to impeachment for high crimes or misdemeanors). Each Justice casts one vote in each case.
