An appropriation is an amount of money designated for a specific purpose by the legislature in a state or federal budget process. In the U.S. Congress, both the House and Senate have Appropriation Committees, which are responsible for designating how and when money may be spent by the federal government. The committees' designations are referred to as appropriations.
