What is the most important right in the Bill of Rights?

Sept. 14, 2014

Freedom of speech, the right to express yourself without interference from the government.

Freedom of religion, the right to practice the faith that you choose.

Freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government.

The right to have an attorney.

These are just a few of our freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights. This month marks the 225th anniversary of Congress’ approving 12 amendments that were sent to the states for ratification as the Constitution’s Bill of Rights.

Congress passed the 12 amendments on Sept. 25, 1789, after whittling them down from the 20 proposed by James Madison. Madison himself had narrowed down the number from hundreds proposed by the states.

You might be surprised to learn that the Bill of Rights, aimed at protecting individuals’ freedoms from the government, was the result of a compromise struck to get the Constitution ratified.

Not all the Founders agreed on the need for a bill of rights, saying that several states already had a Bill of Rights, or voicing concern that listing the rights was unnecessary, and even dangerous. If the rights were written down, then the government might claim that no other rights existed.

Madison was careful to include only amendments that addressed individual rights and wouldn’t change the Constitution, which outlined the powers and structure of the federal government. Two of the 12 amendments sent to the states were not ratified.

One amendment outlined a formula for deciding the size of the House of Representatives based on the population of the United States in 1789.

The other determined when Congress could change its pay. This amendment eventually was ratified in 1992 and became the 27th Amendment.

On Dec. 15, 1791, 10 of the 12 amendments were approved by three-fourths of the state legislatures and became the Bill of Rights. What initially was the third amendment of the 12 proposed amendments became the First Amendment.

The First Amendment encompasses freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom to assemble peaceably, and freedom to petition the government.

The Second Amendment addresses the right to keep and bear arms

The Third Amendment prevents the federal government from housing soldiers in your home without your consent.

The Fourth Amendment protects you from government searches and seizures of your property without a warrant.

The Fifth Amendment says:

• A federal grand jury must initiate charges for serious crimes.
• Defendants can’t be tried twice for the same crime (double jeopardy).
• Defendants can’t be forced to testify or incriminate themselves (the right to remain silent).
• The government cannot take away individuals’ life, property, or freedom without due process.
• The government can’t take a person’s property for public use without adequate payment.

The Sixth Amendment says that the accused have the right to:
• A speedy and public trial
• An impartial jury
• To be told of the charges
• To assistance of counsel
• To confront witnesses against them

The Seventh Amendment says you have the right to a jury trial in cases that exceed $20.

The Eighth Amendment protects you from “cruel and unusual punishments” and excessive bail and fines.

The Ninth Amendment says we have rights beyond those listed in the Bill of Rights.

The Tenth Amendment says the federal government has only the powers granted in the Constitution, such a declaring war and collecting taxes. But other powers are left to the states or the people, such as marriage laws, or driving laws.

What do you think?

Which is the most important right? Have any of the rights affected you directly? How?

The first amendment is the most important because it gives the people a chance to have a voice and stand up for what they believe in. Without the amendment the government would have a lot more power and we would have less say in it.

I feel as though the first amendment, specifically the right to protest, is detrimental in providing freedom to the people because it allows for citizen input and power. To elaborate, a large group of citizens who feel as though a governmental change needs to be implemented can petition and protest in order to achieve the change they want. As stated before, this gives immense power to the citizens, which is extremely important in an effective democracy.

I think that the first amendment contains some of the most essential rights, freedom of speech being the most. Freedom of speech is very important because without it we would basically not be allowed to say our opinions. The freedom of speech is also important because many other amendments are directly or indirectly built upon it.

I think freedom of speech is the most important right in the Bill of Rights. It allows us to be able to participate in our democracy. If someone feels that something is wrong that person is allowed to speak our mind. We are allowed to criticize our government, and I feel that strengthens us as a country because the government can take the criticism and improve themselves.

Without these rights the government wouldn't be based on the people. I would say the first amendment is the most important Bill in the Bill of Rights. Having the right to express yourself is one of the most fundamental rights of the US. The first amendment differentiated the US from the rest of the world in the 1700s and 1800s. The rights in the first amendment are the only rights listed in this bill that are guaranteed to affect every US citizen. The 9th and 10th are too open to count.

A lot of people think that the first or second amendments are the most important, but the thing is, if the bill of rights never existed, we would still have these rights. The bill of rights does not give you these rights, you already have these rights. This is because nowhere in the constitution does it give congress (or any other branch of government) the power to prohibit free speech, or the right to bear arms. The power to control those things is solely given to the states. When they were thinking of creating the bill of rights, many federalists argued that if you made a list of rights the government can't impose on, than you also imply that they can impose on any rights not listed. Because of this the authors included THE MOST IMPORTANT AMENDMENT IS THE 10th. Because this amendment states that any power not outlined in the constitution as the governments, or not prohibited for the states, rests on the states control. This keeps the government from gaining power over anything else.

The Bill of Rights is a documents that protects the citizens' individual rights, however, I think that the First Amendment is the most important amendment. The First Amendment, to sum it up, gives us freedom. It gives us many forms of freedom, like freedom of speech, of the press, of religion, to assemble peaceably, and to petition. Freedom of speech gives us the right to speak freely, with consequences but freely. Freedom of the press lets us write what we read in the newspaper or the magazines. Freedom of religion gives us the right to practice our religion peacefully. The freedom to assemble peaceably lets a group of people meet as long as they are not causing trouble. We are allowed to petition and protest responsibly because of the freedom to petition the government. The First Amendment gives us all these right of freedom, and for these reasons I believe the First Amendment is the most important in the Bill of Rights.

The Bill of Rights help make sure citizens' individual rights are being protected but I believe the most important right is the First Amendment. The First Amendment allows us to express ourselves and say anything we want because it states the government can't make any laws that deny people freedom of speech. Without freedom of speech everything we wear and say will be almost controlled and limited which can lead to a autocratic government. Freedom of speech is why in the newspaper we are read about negative government actions and also subjects the federal government might not want us to know. Also this amendment guaranteed our freedom of religion which means we can practice any religion such as Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Catholicism, Judaism, and etc. It doesn't limit or force us to believe in one thing like how the Native Americans were force into missionaries to practice Christianity without their own consent and while they wanted to believe in their own religion and faith. We are also allow to assemble peacefully without being arrested and charged. Without the First Amendment, the government could just control what we say or do and what we believed in and turn this government from a democratic to dictatorial government.

All of the Bills of Rights are each in some way important, but the First Amendment stands out for the following reasons. The First Amendment provides freedom for the Americans to do many things. The First Amendment ensures that the Americans have freedom to express their opinions, speak up against injustice, and can express themselves freely without worrying of being harmed. With this amendment we are free to express our opinions about our United States government. Did you know in Egypt, that the country’s military dictatorship is arresting, torturing, brutalizing, and even killing people who dare to criticize or express their opinion on their harsh military tyranny. Another reason why the First Amendment is so important is because Americans are not forced to all practice the same religion. This amendment protects people’s ability to practice their religion freely, without worrying of being harmed for practicing a different religion then someone else. Without this amendment there would be no exchanging of ideas. We the people of the United States would not have the life and freedom currently enjoyed today without the First Amendment.

The freedom to express opinions is also a very important right to me because it allows me to speak about issues that I agree or disagree with. If I do not agree with a certain issue, I can voice my opinion and show why that view is wrong. In all, those reasons are why the First Amendment is the most important to me.

The most important Amendment to me in the Bill of Right, is the 1st Amendment because it states that I have the freedom of religion. Which means I can worship what I believe in, and not worry about being harmed by anyone who believe's in something else. It also means, that everyone and anyone can believe in what they want to as they please without worrying about anyone hurting you.

All of the Bill of Rights are equally important, but the the First Amendment is the most important. The First Amendment is the most significant because, it gives us the Freedom of Speech and Religion. The Freedom of Speech gives us the right to speak our minds and how we feel. The first amendment affects me the most because it is freedom of speech and religion. Religion is something that is very important to most people and is something taken very seriously. Most people also base their lifestyle off of the religion the believe in. Freedom of speech is also an important right because this right allows us to be able to have a say and allows us to express our feelings about a situation. Directly this right has allowed me and my family to choose what religion we would like to go by. This right also allows me and my family to speak on something when we have an opinion on something. All of amendments within the bill of rights are important. However one amendment stands out to be the most important. My freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom to assemble peaceably, and freedom to petition the government. Two liberties within the first amendment that are the most important to me however, are the freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The most important liberty to me is the freedom of speech. This is because freedom of speech allows me to speakmy mind and think independently without being punished for my opinion and my beliefs. My freedom of speech allows me to strengthen my mind and become open minded to other ideas. My freedom of speech allows me to become a smarter, more educated individual because I get to here the opinions of others around me. Don't get me wrong Freedom of speech can effect us but everyone will have an opinion and most people might not take it as an opinion based topic but without freedom of speech we would not be able to express ourselves and it would not allow us to be as creative and open-minded as we could be, you should not be punished for expressing how you feel because being punished for saying what's on your mind is honestly cruel. Being able to express yourself freely is a fundamental right. I believe that this is a vital part of American culture. Of the ten of these amendments, this one is the most important. It allows citizens the right to have their own religion, speak their mind, assemble with others, allow for the press to publish freely, etc. The Bill of Rights protects the liberty of all Americans, and the first right lets them live happily without the fear of judgement from the government. On this topic of "Speak Out," it mentions that what was originally the third amendment became the First Amendment. This is very important because the freedoms that are granted by the First Amendment should be known by all. Freedom of speech allows people to speak their minds in what once was a very conservative society, freedom of religion allows people to express their beliefs, and the freedoms of peaceful assembly and to petition the government allow citizens to change what they view as unequal.

The First Amendment gives citizens their most essential rights such as freedom of speech, the press, religion, peaceful assembly, and to petition the government. These rights were not provided for the colonists by the British, and essentially sparked the Revolution. Freedom of speech, I feel, is the most important of these rights, because it truly provides a way for the people to rule and influence their government. Even though not all of the founders were in favor of the Bill of Rights, I think that freedom was something that all of them could agree on. I believe that the most important Amendment in the Bill of Rights is the First Amendment. Being able to speak freely and have freedom of religion is a big part of why our country was founded. People in today's world love to be able to speak their mind even if they should not. People are very opinionated and if they were not able to express their thoughts a lot of the times some things would not get done. Freedom of the press is a big part of today's life. The press and media give the world all of the news they needed. It helps educate people and gives both sides of the opinion so people can place their judgment through the facts. Lastly, the freedom of religion is very important. I agree with Kortney and Brady when they talk about not having to worry about worshiping a God. They are able to worship freely and have no fear of being punished for it. This was a very important thing in the founding of the United States. People wanted to have the freedom to do as they please. The right that has affected my life is the freedom of religion. Without this right I would not have the right to choose the religion I want. I would not be able to go to church every Sunday and praise God in my own way.

I believe that the 5th amendment protects our most important rights. Every single citizen should be protected from the government, and this, I feel, protects the people the best. A jury, not a judge appointed by a monarch, decides on indictments. No matter what, our life, liberty, or property can not be at stake for the same crime twice. The police can't make us talk so we don't incriminate themselves, we get a knowledge attorney to represent us. The government can't take our property without paying us appropriately. Most importantly, our life, liberty, propert, and freedom can NOT be taken by the government without due process. The Bill of Rights were established to protect the people's liberties and to protect us from the potential tyranny of a government. This amendment does just that. These rights have, and will affect everyone at some point. We will all most likely be at a point where police ask to search and seize something, and we have the right to tell them "no." We all have been given the right to a fair justice system by this amendment.

In my opinion, the most important amendment of the Constitution is the Tenth Amendment. I didn't know too much about the Tenth Amendment until I took my advanced government class, and my good friend Mr. Mark Lapan shared his feelings with the class. The Tenth Amendment helps to limit the power of the government has on the states, and it only makes sense that states take care of their own business. It makes no sense for the government to tell state officials what to pass and what not to pass when the officials have a much more experience in their own state activities than the federal government. I don't want someone from Rhode Island to tell me what I can and can't do in the state of Montana, just as they do not want me to tell them what to do.

In my opinion, the most important right in the Bill of Rights is the First Amendment. It accentuates most of our basic rights as being citizens of the United States. According to the article, the state legislatures approved these rights, knowing that this was going to be the first one, and they must've known the importance behind it. The article says that some of the Founders didn't believe that we needed a Bill of Rights, but they are wrong because listing our rights lets people know what they are entitled to. Some may not know. The Ninth Amendment even says that we have rights beyond those listed in the Bill of Rights. The rest are just common knowledge. For example, people have the right to discipline their kids. There doesn't need to be an amendment saying that parents have the right to discipline their kids in whatever way is necessary. People know the difference between right and wrong. I agree with Kortney when she says that America is built on people's opinions, ideas, and decisions. Without the freedom of speech, we would still be living under a monarch. The press gives citizens knowledge about candidates, the weather, the world, and other important things that people should know about. The freedom of religion gives the people an option as to who or what to worship, which ties into the freedom to assemble peacefully. If the freedom to petition the government wasn't accepted, then we would never be able to change for the better and keep increasing in technology, or anything worldwide. People come to the U.S. wanting these freedoms that we provide. We are a happier, more successful nation because of the First Amendment. This impacts me greatly because I am a very outspoken person. In order to be who I am, I need to constantly speak my mind to let others know what I'm thinking and feeling. People deserve to be able to show who they are, and the First Amendment helps with that greatly.

I believe that the most important right included in the BOR is the right to freedom of speech included in the First Amendment. As Kortney said, some of the Founding Fathers disagreed with the Constitution including a Bill of Rights. However, the Bill of Rights becomes increasingly more important in the government as America becomes a more complicated country. The Framers were not able to foresee 225 years into the future when the Bill of Rights is constantly protecting Americans from the Federal Government. Without the right to freedom of speech, the many ideas that drove America forward through the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries may not have appeared so frequently. The Civil Rights movement and the Women's Suffrage movement are both examples of American citizens exercising their right to freedom of speech in order to obtain a political goal. Without the First Amendment and right to freedom of speech, America would be an extremely different place. Everyday I exercise my right to freedom of speech. I am able to express my opinions about any topic without worrying about the government taking actions against me. This is why I believe that the right to freedom of speech included in the First Amendment is the most important.

The most important bill in the Bill of Rights I believe is the first Ammendment. I agree with Kortney in the fact that the opinion of the people is very important. This allows the people to not be restricted by the government on what to believe. The freedom of religion is very important to me. Some people do not agree with what I belive religiously. This Ammendment allows me and others to believe what we think is right religuosly. Also the first Ammendment is what caused the Revolutionary War. Without the first Ammendment the country that we live in today could not be possible. The first Ammendment also allows diversity. Freedom of speech allows people to express themselves and their ideas. This can be used for the good of the country as a whole, a state, a county, a city, or even a school. The First Ammendment is very important in our society today.

As with what Kortney said, some of the Founding Fathers may not have wanted a BOR but they didn't realize how powerful the Federal Government would be 200 years from now. America has changed drastically from when the Constitution was being drafted. Americans are able to every day is speak their minds and express their opinions. I believe that the most important right in the Bill of Rights is the tenth amendment. This right grants the states any power other than the ability to tax and go to war. We are the United STATES of America. In addition, James Madison and the other Fathers of the U.S. Constitution believed that the addition of a Bill of Rights was unnecessary due to other states already having a Bill of Rights. Thus, I believe that other than diplomacy and some taxes the state governments should have the greatest say in any state decision. While a large majority of bloggers would say the first amendment is the most important, I will agree with this to an extent. Our freedom of speech is important but it doesn't make us as unique of a nation as the tenth amendment. Every continent has at least one country with freedom of speech. On our own continent both Canada and Cuba grant freedom of speech. This is an important right, but I believe the most important and unique right is the tenth amendment.

I believe that the First Amendment is the most important right in the Bill of Rights. Although the article says that some Founders weren’t fond of the Bill of Rights, I believe that it has utmost importance in the world today. I believe that America is built on people’s opinions, ideas, and decisions. I believe that without these ideas freely expressed by the people of the United States we wouldn’t have much to be grounded on, including the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. If the citizens of the United States didn’t stand up to Great Britain, we could still very well be a part of Britain. This freedom of speech is also important when debating, expressing opinions, and running for office. Without the freedom of speech, candidates running for office may not be able to show that their opponent is hiding something or isn’t the best candidate. This goes along with the freedom of the press. The press is able to capture almost anything and everything now days. Without the press or even television, people would be absolutely clueless in what was going on around the country and even the world. People don’t investigate things themselves, and with the press capturing every moment of different candidates, this helps Americans understand issues and candidates more thoroughly. News stations are able to express their opinions freely to the whole country because of the First Amendment. My last point ties in with what Brady has said, which is the freedom of religion. I strongly agree with Brady in that I never will have to worry about being punished for worshipping God. Attending church every Sunday and teaching children about Christ wouldn’t be possible without the First Amendment, and for that I am extremely grateful.

I agree with Logan and Brady; the First Amendment is the most important because it protects the personal liberties everyone wanted in the first place. The United States was founded on these certain rights that gives them more freedoms than the country they just left. These rights are more for everyday instances and directly towards what the citizens can or cannot do rather than the other Amendments. I also think the Eighth Amendment is very important. This protects you from cruel and unusual punishments and bail and fines. This Amendment somewhat protects the people from potential tyranny of the government. This Amendment is widely debated for what is considered "cruel and unusual punishment" but I beleive this has saved many people from unjust situations.

I agree with Logan and believe that the First Amendment contains the most important right. This right is the ability to practice, "freedom of religion." I value my faith above all else, and the fact that my country allows me to do this is remarkable. This freedom has affected me directly and continues to do so at least twice a week. I attend church every Wednesday and Sunday and do not have to be afraid of being punished for my faith. The second most important amendment, in my opinion, is the Ninth Amendment. This amendment recognizes the fact that we as Americans, "have rights beyond those listed in the Bill of Rights. There is no way all the rights a citizen needs and wants can be listed, and this amendment points that out. I am so grateful our Founding Fathers decided to eventually include a Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution. These rights are exactly what the Revolutionary War was fought over, and I hope nobody ever takes them for granted.

In my opinion, the most important right is mentioned first and for good reason. In my own life, The Second Amendment and the Third Amendment allow me to possess arms and prevent the government from housing soldiers in my home, respectively. Those two amendments have affected me directly.

To me, the most important amendment is the Fifth Amendment. This is due to two of the five listed statements. The first one is that "A federal grand jury must initiate charges for serious crimes." I agree with this statement because it limits the power of the defendant and it makes sure that those guilty of murder and etc. will not be able to stand "not guilty" and possibly commit another felony. I also agree with the statement, "Defendants can't be forced to incriminate themselves." This is important because it limits the power of the jury and it allows the defendant a chance for justice if he/she, in fact, did not commit the crime or deserves a share of both sides. It also protects the rights in the First Amendment. These rights have affected me directly due to the fact of my parents divorce. If not for the right of speech for the defendant, my mother would not have custody rights for me and my brother.

I feel that the first amendment is the most important right . I feel this way because freedom to assemble peaceably and to petition the government makes us have the best government possible in that not only do we select our leaders we also get to protest and let the government know how we feel and be able to have the press make it known by the freedom of the press. I also think that freedom of speech and religion are very important seeing how they are the basis of our country as a whole. Without these basic freedoms the United States of America wouldn't be the land of the free and would have no astounding attributes. None of these laws have affected me directly but I wouldn't doubt that they will later on in life.

In my opinion, the First Amendment is the most important right in the Bill of Rights. It outlines many of the basic freedoms that we as Americans have come to know and love. Without the rights to freedom of speech, religion, and of the press, the government could censor everything we say. We could also be arrested for simply disagreeing with some policies that Congress may be enacting. Not only do I believe that it's the most important amendment, but I believe it also the most popular amendment among Americans. I always here people talking about their freedom of speech, and that alone should help represent its importance to American society.

I believe that the most important right given to us citizens of the United States by the Bill of Rights is the fist Amendment. This amendment is the very thing that gives us the freedom which separates us from countries which suffer under a tyrannical government. This amendment, which guarantees freedoms of speech, press, protest, petition, and religion, is what defines us as Americans. This amendment acts as my protection to share my views and speak my thoughts. I believe that the First Amendment is the most important in the Bill of Rights. This amendment embodies the spirit of America in that it showcases how dedicated this country is to the natural or inalienable rights stated in the constitution. This is what makes America so different and helps make this system of government work.

The fifth amendment is by far the most important of the ten listed in the Bill of Rights. This is because it includes limitations on what the government can do to people who it thinks to have done something wrong. Why is that so important? Because even if the government were to overstep its boundaries, become corrupt, and begin to declare unfair things illegal, they would still have to respect the rules stated in this amendment. They can't do anything to a citizen without due process. They can't force the citizen to testify against themselves. They can't take a citizen's property or infringe upon their most basic of rights.

We have the ability to talk down on our OWN government, and though it may not seem like much, people in other countries have DIED doing that, even till today. We have the freedom of putting anything we believe is right or informational, no matter what it may be out there for the rest of the world to see. and that is what i find so beautiful about the u.s.a. Very informative! I think that the most valuable of all of the rights established in the Bill of Rights are those listed in the first amendment. This is great way to summarized everything that is necessary in order to tolerate one and other. Having these freedoms written on paper gives us as a nation the feeling of security and confidence to express ourselves and who we are. One of my rights I believe has been most affect by this Bill of rights is the freedom of religion. I feel like having this freedom I am able to find a religion that expresses my beliefs and my way of thinking. This makes me confident in what I feel in the sense of my relationship with God.

I believe that out of all the amendments out there, the most important is perhaps the 1st Amendment, which gives American citizens the right to free speech. It is this Amendment which physically gives the people a say in what happens to them. It is not, as most people see it, a get out of jail free card for speech. It is so much more important than that, and it is sad that this Amendment, which has allowed us to take part in debates, express opinions, and let our voice be heard, has been reduced to such. With this amendment, we the people have been given a chance to speak out in defense of the basic civil liberties, first written by John Locke, that define us as free from from rule by any sort of tyrannical system. And without that basic right, my opinion wouldn't even be available to the public eye as it is now.

The ninth amendment of the constitution is the most significance because it clarifies that American citizens has rights beyond those stated in the constitution. The bill of rights was intended to protect the rights of citizens not necessarily to limit them. However, by defining rights of American citizens they ran the risk of limiting people only to the rights expressed in the Constitution. The ninth amendment expresses that people are entitled rights to beyond those included in the Constitution and that why its is the most important amendment. the ninth amendment had not been included in the constitution rights many heinous crimes such as “rape” might not have been punishable by law because none of the other amendments express rights to a person's "body".

I believe that the most important right in the Bill of Rights is the first amendment. The first amendment not only allows for freedom of speech, but allows for the freedom to assemble. Whenever we as United States citizens feel like there is a social and/or political injustice we are able to gather and protest peaceably in order to make our thoughts known. Without the freedom to assemble the Civil Rights, Gay Rights, Women’s Rights and many more movements would have never taken place and made an impact our society. From the American Revolution to this day, Americans wouldn't be able to overcome all the struggles this country has been through: the Civil Rights movement, Women's Suffrage, Gay Rights, and more. The most important right is all within the first amendment. The first amendment allows citizens to voice their opinions, because every voice matters. If the people didn't have a voice, the U.S. would still be under British rule. It's extremely important for people not to be scared to express what they feel about government issues, and it is our job as citizens to respect everyone's voice as it is a reflection of our own.

The most important right that we have in my opinion would be the First Amendment. I think the First Amendment is the most important because the First amendment I feel applies to us as a nation on a daily basis. Being that we can speak freely everyday, praise whoever we want, and not be criticized for it. The First Amendment also applies to us in a way that we can even stand against large businesses, or even the government itself with the freedom to assemble peaceably, and petition to the government. The fact that the government allowed us to have as much freedom as we do really shows how lucky we are that we have so many rights. It really makes me feel very grateful because I know that not every country around the world has the same freedom as my family and I do. An important part of the rights affect me directly everyday because I am allowed to speak freely, I am allowed to pray everyday if I want without being persecuted by others, and having the right to take a stand against the government if I feel that something is not constitutional when it comes to my rights, or others rights.

In light of recent events, I can’t help but feel the first amendment is very valuable. It is one of the rights that is easiest to violate, because it requires a level of cruelty and bigotry that is all too common in too many Americans. It is also one of the rights easiest to use as a shield. For clarity, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from social repercussions or even freedom from backlash from others, just protection from the government. This right is often misunderstood and used as an excuse to spout chauvinistic nonsense. The first amendment is so valuable, and is being violated daily. In Ferguson, police are unjustly arresting innocent bystanders, forcing peaceful protesters to continue moving instead of allowing them to assemble, attacking and silencing the press, and so on. The thing is that the first amendment coincides very directly with the safety of the people. To infringe on their rights is not just unjust, its inhumane, as violating these rights almost always results in violence. The first amendment is most important when it is being protected in sensitive and important situations such as the situation in Ferguson. It is vital.

The First Amendment is the most important because it allows the freedom of speech, religion, right to petition the government and assemble peaceably. With the first amendment the other can be eventually written out if needed. The freedom of speech allows the people to speak up and voice their opinions on what is needed to be done and what is right or wrong. The First Amendment allows the people to keep in touch with whatever native roots they have, to keep in touch with their culture and religion. In a country that is trying to separate powers efficiently the First amendment is a must. Being Charged repeatedly for the same crime, being forced to testify in a case that could incriminate you, the right to due process; these are all important things that are often taken for granted, but if the government could get away with them, like they did during the colonial America, this country would be so vastly different that we would hardly even recognize the legal and Judicial parts of our government.

The most important amendment in the Bill Of Rights is under the first amendment. This amendment states several very important rights that directly define the term "freedom" such as freedom of speech, press, religion. All very personal and key factors in an individual. Then it also states that we have the ability to petition the government which is also very important as it directly links this bill to the constitution where it says it is our duty to change things if they are wrong. There is so much jam packed into this one amendment which makes it the most important because of the very basic, yet extraordinary rights inclusive.

The most important right in the Bill of Rights is located under the Sixth Amendment. Listed under this amendment are rights such as the right to a speedy and public trial, unbiased jury of peers and to be told what you are being charged with. To many American citizens these are taken for granted, I used to simply take them lightly as well. Then I learned the reality of the justice systems outside of the the US. For example in China they have no right to a speedy trial, and many who are innocent still spend months or even years before they have their case brought before the court. In other countries the jury, if there is one, is consisted of biased or paid personal who do not really care about delivering justice. In Venezuela, which has one of the worst criminal justice systems in the world, a defendant would be lucky to hear their charges and then get a fair trial. The rights that protect us in the court of law are the most important, because they keep us from becoming what we least want to be.

I’m tempted to say that the most important right in the Bill of Right for me would be the first amendment, because it’s pretty obvious how important that right is to everybody, and how common somebody would be to use that as an excuse or to back themselves up on an argument or debate. But in all actuality, I think the most important right for me, is the ninth amendments, which state that I have rights beyond those listed in the Bill of Rights. The ninth amendment is incredibly important because it maintains the rights retained by the people, it limits and enjoins the federal government from making these rights illegal, and it restates the basic theory of the government, which is that the rights come from the people to the government, not that rights come from the government to the people. I like being able to know that I am able to keep these rights, privileges, and powers not written in the Constitution, and that the government cannot take away these rights from me, rights that I know I have which aren’t necessarily written in the first 10 amendments.

I am able to have weekly meetings and talk to whomever about my beliefs. Since my religion plays a critical role in my everyday life, I greatly appreciate this freedom as do others. Without this freedom everything would be more complicated and every other religion would break the law and practice their religion behind closed doors.

I think the most important right is the freedom of religion. If you go back to when the country first began that is one of the main reasons people came here. They wanted that freedom because it wasn't allowed where they were. So many people try to take that away today. It's the first amendment. I think it's one of the first for that very reason. It shows just how important it was to them back then and still should be that important today.

I think the 9th Amendment is the most important Amendment. It states that we have rights beyond whats listed in our Bill of Rights. This covers any specific situation that a citizen may encounter. This Amendment also prevents any person from being "screwed over" by another person, group, and/or our government.

I believe that the Ninth Amendment is one of the most important amendments in the in the Bill of Rights. This is due to the fact that it states that at citizens, we have other rights that remain unstated in the Bill or Rights. If the time was taken to write out all the rights of the people, it would take forever. By putting this simply stated Amendment in the Bill or Rights, it takes care of all of those unstated rights. This is why I believe that the Ninth Amendment is the most important Amendment stated in the Bill or Rights.

Many of the amendments are essential in order to have progress. Two amendments that I believe are important are the ninth and the first. The ninth amendment simply express that we have rights that are not included in the Bill of Rights, but that they’re still acknowledge by the people and are necessary to follow for day to day life. These voting, civil rights, military, citizenship, tax, and many more items that we may take for granted. The first amendment is giving way to let the people announced their concerns and ideas that they believe are not being communicated by city, state, and national levels of government control and organizations.

The most important amendment is obviously going to be the first amendment. Without the freedom of speech, how can you follow through with the other amendments. If we did not have the freedom of speech, there would be no purpose to have a rule about making amendments because the government would be able to do what they please since citizens' points of view would not the matter. Without the freedom of speech itself, we would not be able to have the rest of the rights listed in the first amendment.

I think the most important one is the 1st Amendment because it has the freedom of speech, from the press, freedom of religion, to assemble peacefully, and freedom to petition the government. It is crazy when people have to change shirts in school or go home because of what their shirt says or when they get in trouble for what they said. If there was no freedom of the press and you were a popular person then your house would be flooded with fans 24/7 and you would get no privacy. If there was no freedom of religion, then there would be one religion and nobody would have the freedom of trying new religion in other countries. If there wasn't a freedom to assemble peacefully, then you couldn't have committees for churches or towns or governments. If there was no freedom to petition the government, then you couldn't change anything about the government that you didn't like, and if alot of other people didn't like it, then you can change it, since we have this Amendment.

I think The First Amendment is the most important. Everyone has different opinions and beliefs, and we should be able to express those beliefs and opinions freely. Our individuality is what makes life interesting! If everyone had to believe or think exactly the same it would be really boring! Expressing your own opinion is something that people in other countries get arrested or even killed for! We're lucky because no one tells us we have to believe this or can't think that way! We don't always realize how lucky we are to live in a country that allows us to be ourselves!

I think the 8th amendment is the most important one. Why? It stops you from getting cruel and unusual punishments you don't deserve (even though we still deal with police brutality). This helps since you can not worry about getting punished for no reason. This way the authorities don't get to much power to the point that they lose it. For example you have a very expensive Lambrogani and an authority see's it. They get somewhat jealous then they decide that they want the car for him/herself. So they beat you up take your keys and takes your car. So that's why I think the 8th amendment is the most important one.

I believe that the most important right is the First Amendment. Everyone should be able to voice their opinions without fear of being punished by the government. It is unfortunate that other governments do not allow their citizens to freely express their diverse thoughts. In the 21st century, everyone has their own opinion and a right to voice their feelings. These basic rights are protected by the first amendment. Freedom of religion has affected me directly because it explains that all people are free to practice religious preferences and not fear that they may be in the wrong, or force others to believe in the things they do.

The first Amendment in the bill of rights is amendment I. Freedom of religion is what our country was founded upon, and frankly, without it this country wouldn't be necessary. America was founded for people to be free of religious persecution so it seems only natural that we would have this amendment. Amendment I stands as more of a symbol for what America was founded for rather than to protect the people it rules over. We live the way we do today because of the sacrifices that people made before us, and this amendment represents those who have died to make this country great.

I believe that the most important freedom would have to be the freedom of religion. It was one of the first reason to create the United States, to have freedom to practice whatever religion one so chooses. Without this freedom, we are vulnerable to becoming the kind of society that we tried to get away from in the early 1400s and 1500s. The most important Bill of Rights is the 1st one, or the freedom of religion, speech, and press. Any person should have the right to pray to and believe in their own personal preference of a higher power. Forcing one to praise the God they don't believe in would be extremely wrong. Next, the main one is freedom of speech. Every person is entitled to their own opinion, and nothing can change that. People think differently than others, and some like to voice their thoughts. Although this gives the people to the opportunity to down talk our government, they still have the right to speak their mind. Last, the press should be able to talk about whatever they want without having the fear of being punished for what they say. All in all, the 1st Amendment in the Bill of Rights is by far the most important.

The most important right in the Bill of Rights to me personally, is the Freedom of speech. It literally ticks me off to hear that someone got in trouble because of "Disrespect". What the? I thought saying what you WANTED was in the Bill of Rights, but apparently Schools, Officers, and law abiding citizens don't even know there rights either if we cant say what we want. Who gets to say that just because your a Police Officer doesn't mean i cant verbally express what i feel about them? Or did i misuse the term " freedom of speech". Thats why i believe that freedom of speech is a rare virtue, because no one on the planet can break your true thoughts and feelings for a subject.
