Should Kim Kardashian pay more taxes?

By Jeremy Quattlebaum, Student Voices staff writer

“Being on TV changed my life,” quips Kim Kardashian on a YouTube video, “because I get lots of free stuff!”

Kardashian’s claim starts off a video that campaigns to raise the tax rate for multimillionaires in California. Claiming that Kardashian made over $12 million in 2010 and paid only 1 percent more in taxes than the average Californian who makes $47,000 a year, the video makes the argument that millionaires should pay more taxes to pay for vital services like education and emergency responders.

“We are not judging Miss Kardashian, we are just making a very simple point,” Rick Jacobs, the chairman and founder of Courage Campaign, told ABC News. “It isn’t fair or appropriate for someone who makes that kind of money to pay the essentially the same tax rate as someone who makes $47,000 a year. It doesn’t make any sense.”

The tax, the makers of the video are arguing, could be a ballot initiative in California’s November election.

The “millionaires tax” is not just a California thing either. It has become a national discussion with polar opposites like America’s richest man, Warren Buffett, and the Occupy Movement both claiming that the top 1 percent of Americans should pay more in taxes.

Proponents of increasing the tax burden on the super wealthy argue that they are not paying their fair share of taxes and that the tax would curb the rising income inequity that has been increasing over the past decade.

The president even made statements about increasing the tax burden for the ultra-rich in the 2012 State of the Union. Obama said, “Right now, we're poised to spend nearly $1 trillion more on what was supposed to be a temporary tax break for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans. Right now, because of loopholes and shelters in the tax code, a quarter of all millionaires pay lower tax rates than millions of middle-class households. Right now, Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.”

But most millionaires and billionaires are against the idea. Republican presidential aspirant Mitt Romney argues that increasing taxes for the wealthy is essentially punishing people for being successful and that the tax would hurt successful small- and medium-sized businesses that are creating jobs.

"I believe in a merit nation, an opportunity nation where people by virtue of their education, their hard work and risk taking and their dreams – maybe a little luck – could achieve great things," Romney said at a campaign rally in Florida.

What do you think?

Should millionaires have to pay a higher percentage in taxes than middle-class taxpayers? Would the tax punish hardworking and successful people as Mitt Romney claims? Join the discussion and let us know what you think!

Being a millionaire is something that everyone wants to be, it’s something that people dream about being. But when you’re born into, you don’t know what it’s like not to have money. I think that everyone should have to pay the same amount of taxes, whether you’re wealthy or not. The Kardashians are just another family that has a lot of money. There are a lot of people who are just as wealthy as them, just they aren’t on E!, I think that just because they are people think they should have to pay more, but if I was them, I wouldn’t want to. It’s also the fact that it’s not like all their money is being thrown away. They help out charities and have businesses. You’re going to have to pay taxes either way, if millionaires have to pay more, the middle-class is going to still have to pay as much if not more than they do now. Making them pay more will only make the Government get more money, not the middle-class. The Government will still being getting every last dime then can from the middle-class too.

My opinion on taxing is in the middle. On the one hand it only seems fair that people with more money should pay more; however it wouldn't be fair to them if they inherited that money. I think it's fair to keep everyone paying the same because that way people can't really complain much. Just because someone has a higher paying job or is more successful doesn't really constitute the right to tax them more. Maybe the people with more money have had to go through college to earn their degrees, or maybe the people who complain about taxes gave up their schooling. I think it really depends on which way you look at it.

i think richer people should pay more taxes then most people because one the comments i read on here made very good points. people who make $47,000 a year pay the same amout as kim kardshian no thats ridiculouse because kim is rich if i were rich id be willing to pay more taxes becuase the econmie needs it for education and other objectives for the goverment like paying for new roads and enviromental products

I believe that millionaires like Kim Kardashian and others should pay a higher percentage of tax. The way I look at it is that it isn't fair for someone who works their butt off, works two jobs, and makes around 20 thousand to pay the same taxes than a person who only advertises products, travels around the world, and can make 20 million. I know it seems a bit childish to say it that way, but that's the most simple way I can put it. The more you make, the higher your taxes should be, and I know it sucks because everyone always complains but if you're making 20 million a year then I'm pretty sure you won't mind nor notice. And how would this punish the hardworking people? They would still be paying their share of taxes for the right amount of money that they earned.

I think the tax should not be raised because celebrities and the rich already pay a higher percentage in taxes than middle-class taxpayers. Depending on your income, your tax increases as well. I feel that as Americans, we already pay enough taxes, and they shouldn’t be raised.

What most people probably don’t know is that millionaires already pay a higher percentage in taxes than middle-class taxpayers. As your income increases, so do your taxes. It is also necessary to point out that we are talking about tax rates. Comparing the “amount” of taxes a millionaire pays to those of a middle class teacher or store clerk is unreasonable considering that what they each pay is completely different. If an average teacher pays about 10% or $6,000 of their income in taxes, a millionaire would pay $1,200,000, assuming they had the same tax rate, which is rare. About 3% of Americans (the “ultra-rich”) pay almost 95% of the taxes in the US. Millionaires should not have their tax rates raised. This kind of discrimination based on wealth is exactly what is lowering the work ethic of this nation and, as Mitt Romney points out, would destroy hard work and the opportunity for jobs would decrease. What motive is there to strive for the best and climb to the top when you keep less of what you earn when you get there?

I believe in the adage that to whom more is giving, much is expected. It is fair for the millionaires and billionaires to pay more than those who are less fortunate not to have much. Because some of them Millionaires have more money, than the poor people who are struggling to put food on the table for their family. The idea the millionaires and billionaires create wealth , to me is not correct. Because most of them evade paying taxes by keeping their wealth abroad . Why the poor masses are stock to pay taxes at home. Most of the Millionaires and Billionaires leave very flamboyant life spending money on things that does not benefit other people but them and their family. The income inequality maybe bridged. Then those people in the lower income bracket to me needs some tax break, so that they could have money to spend. There by putting more money in circulation as against the millionaires who keeps their money in the bank and do not spend it always. I don't think that paying more will be punishing the millionaires and billionaires because most of the millionaires do not create jobs, instead they money is stacked away in the banks. In both local and foreign banks and therefore not creating any opportunity for others. It is fair that the millionaires and billionaires have the ability to pay more, and therefore should help the economy especially that these time of great unemployment in the country.

I believe that wealthy people, such as Kim Kardashian, should pay more in taxes. I think that it is fair because they have a lot more money than middle-class people like us. If a middle class person earns an average of $47,000 a year, and someone like Kim Kardashian earns an average of $12 million a year, then would it not be fair for them to pay a little more in taxes? I believe that they can afford it and it wouldn't hurt them. If we can get by with $50,000 a year, then they can too. In the end, it won't make a big difference if they have $12 million or $10 million.

I think that people who make this much money hould in fact have a higher percent in taxes. They should notthough make the percentage to the point where the government is just taking their hard earned money. They should have a slightly higher percentage than the average peron who pays taxes.

Remember Tiger Woods? Remember how he cheated on his wife with several lovers which lead to a divorce? I'm sure you do. What you probably didn't know is that Elin Nordegren, Tiger's ex-wife, received 100 million dollar settlement. And she spent 12 million of those (which is what Kim Kardashian made in 2010) to buy a house only to demolish it hours later. Millionaires have money, the only problem is they don't want to pay higher taxes so they can stupid things just to destroy them. It isn't fair for a millionaire to pay the same amount of taxes as a school teacher, or the same as a single mother working to part time jobs. Athletes spend thousands of dollars on cars and dates, only to go bankrupt 5 years after retirement. Making people like this pay higher taxes won't punish hardworking and successful people. They won't even know that money is gone. Plus, successful people play by the rules. They had to follow them in order to get where they're at. They will do what's fair by their part.

Millionaires should not have to pay a higher tax rate than middle-class Americans. I believe all citizens should pay an equal, fair rate in taxes. While fearing the punishment of the hardworking is a noble sentiment, a more practical problem with over-taxing the rich is that, like Mitt Romney also says, it may hurt those who are creating jobs. Under-taxing the rich, on the other hand, would diverge millionaires' money from public projects in education and infrastructure and is wholly unfair to those equally hardworking citizens who earn middle-of-the-road incomes. The solution, rather, would be to eliminate the “loopholes and shelters in the tax code” that allow millionaires and billionaires like Warren Buffett to pay little in taxes and make everyone—from the drugstore cashier to Kim Kardashian—pay an equal tax rate.

Kim Kardashian. really?. First of all why not pick an important person to talk about instead of someone who is only rich because her family. But i still don't believe we should raise the taxes on the rich because for the most part they have worked hard to earn there money, and for the lower classes to say the riches taxes should be increased is wrong because that is not going to lower the taxes the middle class pays. Just because the government cant manage its money correctly doesn't mean the few who can need to be penalized for it. (;

Does Kim Kardashian actually do anythign that supports anyone but herself? I have no idea nor do I care. But because she pays the same taxes as an average citizen is garbage. Taxes should be proportional whether you are a millionare or an average citizen. Your taxes should reflect how much money you make. Some people work there asses of and have to pay a large sum in taxes wheras a person who does literally nothing (Kim Kardashian, Sports players, ect.) have to pay a miniscule sum. Its rediculas that they have been able to do this sure they do charity work and stuff like that but is that really all they can do? Our economy is blowing out we have people spending a billion dollars on a house? Really are you gonna use all of those rooms for anything productive. Its a shame that people have no morals or any kind of care for anyone but themselves.

Personally, I think millionaires should have to pay a higher percentage in taxes than middle-class taxpayers. In my opinion, I feel as though millionaires don't know how much they can help provide for us by paying a higher tax rate. If some generous millionaires stepped up to speak against their fellow stingy millionaire friends, we will have better education and public services. So many millionaires go out and waste their money on items that they don't need. They feel they need it, but in retrospect, they just want it. Instead of squandering all that money on pointless materialistic things, why not do something good with it? After reading what Mitt Romney has said, I feel as though millionaires are being stingy and greedy with their money. They know they have money, but they want more. Millionaires need to pay taxes that are appropriate for their income. Not all of us are as lucky and fortunate as they are. Just because we're not millionaires doesn't mean we're not hardworking. Being generic, most millionaires don't have to work very hard for their money. Sure, they worked hard to get where they got at this point in life, but surely they don't have to lift many fingers to make a couple thousand dollars. Celebrities get 50k or more just to be on a commercial, that's basically what the average middle class family makes in a year. Therefore, are we really punishing them? The middle-class are some of the most stressed and hardworking people in the world. To make us pay the same percentage of tax as the super wealthy is just preposterous. The little bit of higher tax placed upon the millionaires will do so much more good in this world then if they used it to splurge on a pair of shoes that they will wear once in their lifetime.

I believe that the higher percentage of the United States does need to pay more taxes. Their are family that are barely able to survive much less shell out taxes, the rich have so much money that they are not even using, they can easily sacrifice some of the money they are pulling in to give to government. I understand that people have had to work hard to make that money but nobody honestly needs that much money, i believe that it is a small price to pay to be able to live a life that most people only dream of.

People who are millionaires get more deducted for taxes anyway. The government is the one using all of our money for themselves. Our taxes must match how much the government spends so it doesn't go into debt. Do they care how many Americans go into debt? Go broke? Become homeless? Can't pay for healthcare? Yes Kim makes more money then most everyone else and yes she could help and give to charities or the less fortunate, but if she pays more taxes it just goes to the government. Who's really selfish? Taxes are a very touchy subject. Yes, I do believe that the richer population is undertaxed, but we shoudn't raise it to the point that they might as well be making the same as the average joe. Taxes should be subjective to income level, but if you raise it so much that the rich are not longer to take risks and invest, well then our economy would be facing the risk of a major meltdown. A lot of the rich use their money to start businesses that help middle and lower class peoples. In Kardashian's case, she is doing absolutely nothing productive with her money, but that doesn't mean she should pay more than people making the same as her. Yes she's a spoiled brat, but that doesn't mean anything for extreme taxes.

No millionaires shouldn't have to pay more taxes then middle-class people. I think that because we are all people and we all have money (some more than others) to spend on important things. I agree, they have the money, they should pay more, help support the society they are part of. At the same time though the taxes should not be to high. Some millionares are born into their wealth, and others have worked hard for their money and income rate. Although their are hard working millionares, I do think that if you make such an extreme amount of money, you should pay higher tax rates. Most millionares live extravagently and they have the right to do so. Asking them to pay a higher tax rate is not asking them to give up their 'mansion' or 'fancy sports car'. It is asking them to be fair and learn how to manage their money, not flamboyantly spend it on all the luxuries that America has to offer. Spending more money on taxes, in my opinion, will not affect their lifestyle very much.

There are to many loopholes are created for the wealthy if they didn't use them it would make there percentage on the taxes more equal to those of the middle class. It's not punishing them for being successful it's making it equal for them if they pay less taxes then the middle class should pay lower taxes it's simple to see that the tax rates are not equal like they should be.

Taxes should be raised for the wealthy, but targeting them directly is not free enterprise or Capitalism. The rich should pay more taxes but the taxes should be decided based on a flat percentage. There should be a tax of about 5% of the income of every person. The poor would get minimal taxes and survive. The common would be happy with low taxes. The rich would be content with a higher tax that didn't really hurt them. The results would seem different and be different but in reality taxes would be equal for all, a flat percentage.

When you think of celebrities, what is the first word that comes to mind? For me, that one simple word is money. Money and richness is flowing out of celebrity’s ears and mouth. And then, there are indigent people that live on the streets that look forward to that one dollar bill that they find laying on the street. Then there are the middle-class people who have to work hard for their money and have to think before they spend. So then why if celebrities have so much money do they not have to pay high taxes? Celebrities make over $12 million a year while others make $47,000 a year. That is a big difference! Therefore those celebrities and millionaires should have to pay higher taxes. If they want that much money, there is a “fee” to have that.
