Path to the Presidency: How have the Internet and social media changed campaigns?

Oct. 5, 2012

By John Vettese, Student Voices staff writer

The first presidential debate between President Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney on Oct. 3 set a record for tweets – 11.1 million – for a U.S. political event, Twitter said. While millions watched the debate on TV, social media allowed people to offer their own commentary in real time. “It has democratized the commentary,” according to an Associated Press story. The public no longer has to wait to hear what TV analysts have to say, the AP said.

“Old media is not dead,” Scott Talan, assistant professor of communication at American University, said in the AP story. “But now we have more people involved and engaged because of digital means.”

And it’s not just Twitter. If this is your first time following a presidential election, take a moment to think about how much of the information you read about it involves your computer or cell phone.
Whether you’re watching campaign ads on YouTube and Vimeo, following the candidates on Twitter and Facebook, or getting the latest updates on their websites or via texts, the presidential campaign is a different beast now than it was only 12 years ago.

When George W. Bush and Al Gore vied for the White House in 2000, the Internet was in its early stages as a campaign tool. The fact that the candidates had websites was a revolutionary concept. The message largely got out through television ads, print ads and in-person campaigning.

That type of campaigning still exists – take a look at WhiteHouse.gov to see the number of public appearances the president makes on a weekly basis. But many look at 2012 as the year the Internet and social media dominated in presidential campaigns.

Fund-raising

In 2008, the Obama campaign’s hugely successful online fund-raising dramatically altered how candidates raise money. Of the more than $600 million raised in that campaign, Obama campaign aides said $500 million was from online contributions, mostly from large numbers of donors who gave relatively small amounts ($10 to $100) and donated multiple times. Traditionally, a smaller pool of deep-pocketed donors drives a campaign.

Mobile technology has also come in to play. The Federal Election Commission ruled in June that candidates are permitted to solicit donations through mass-text-message campaigns – again, in smaller amounts (no more than $50).
Candidates also have stepped up their use of email. By the time Barack Obama was elected, his email list had 13 million addresses, according to his campaign. When Sen. John Kerry ran for president in 2004, his email list numbered 3 million. And former Gov. Howard Dean, another 2004 presidential candidate, was at the time considered one of the most technologically sophisticated campaigners, one of the first to gain popularity in the online world; his e-mail list numbered 600,000.

Campaign ads vs. web videos

In the past, candidates got their message out through TV ads, which are expensive. Not only did candidates have to pay a film crew and editors to produce a campaign ad, they also had to spend even more money to get that ad on television.

Even though candidates still run ads on cable and broadcast television, they are increasingly putting more ads on their own websites and video websites like YouTube and Vimeo. This is a money saver for the candidates. Online ads are not necessarily as expensive to produce, and can be made quicker. And once candidates have paid to get their ad made, posting it to YouTube or on their own website is free, and thousands of voters will see it there.

Social media

Candidates are increasing their social media presence, which allows them to get out their message 24/7 without relying on traditional print or broadcast media.

With Twitter, campaigns can send out a stream of messages to supporters, organize at the grass-roots level, jump on a hot issue, or fire off a quick response to a rival’s claims. Facebook is another platform for candidates to present their issues, solicit donations, and communicate with supporters.

Facebook and Twitter also have been incorporated into presidential debates. In January, NBC News and Facebook partnered on a Republican primary debate that was broadcast on Meet the Press and streamed live on Facebook. Questions for candidates came from Facebook users. On Twitter, political commentators live-tweet the debates, and campaign aides jump in, not waiting for the traditional post-debate “spin.”

Kirsten Kukowski, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, was quote in the Philadelphia Inquirer as saying, Twitter “has become how news gets started, and how that news is amplified.”

Old-style campaigning

Critics say that although the Internet is a powerful campaign tool, it should not completely replace old-fashioned campaigning in person. “It’s one test I think an American president should pass,” wrote PBS NewsHour commentator Judy Woodruff. “That he or she is given passing marks by a swath of ordinary citizens who’ve taken his or her measure in a small town hall meeting, a coffee shop conversation or a fireside chat.”

In remarks at Social Media Week, President Obama’s digital director, Teddy Goff, said, “In this election [voters] cannot only disengage, they can disengage and then tweet about how disengaged they are.”

What do you think?

Are the Internet and social media effective ways to campaign? Do you think these changes have been for the better? Where do you get your information about candidates? Do you pay closer attention to the campaigns since more information is easily accessible? Why or why not? Join the discussion and let us know what you think!

The internet and social media by far are the best ways to campaign in present day America. As the years go by more and more people are getting engaged in social media and the internet. Even though there is still a large amount of citizens who still prefer the old way of advertising, in the years to come, the percentage of Americans in that group will start to decrease. This change in advertising has benefited candidates by helping them reach a larger crowd in a shorter amount of time. I get most of my information on these candidates via twitter. Main ways I receive information on these candidates is through tweets of my peers or online polls being ran. I tend to pay more attention to the campaigns due to the amount of opinions I see on my timeline on certain candidates and certain political topics. This makes it easier to pay attention to political campaigns because it becomes part of social media which is something that I engage in daily.

Internet and Social Media is an effective way to campaign. It's because a lot of upcoming voters are on social media so they will be informed before they vote, also social media is a big part of our lives now. I think that these changes have been for the better because it helps more people get information about the election and politics in general. I get my information about the candidates through social media as I am on social media almost all the time. I don't try to pay closer attention to the campaigns I just happen to see it in social media so I get informed that way. The campaigns are not something that is much of an importance to me right now but in the near future I will try to pay more attention to the campaign.

The internet and social media are effective ways to campaign, as I get information about candidates from the internet and social media. The changes in campaigning have been for the better for our generation because everything is happening at your fingertips, keeping you aware of what's going on. Taking AP Government has kept me in tune to campaigns, but if I was not taking this class I would find campaigns idle regardless of Twitter buzz.

1. I do believe social media is an effective way to campaign, as it quickly gets out campaigners' ideas and opinions, and also gives campaigners a way to interact with voters. 2. I think it's good and bad at times. It's a good way for campaigners to interact with voters, but it can be bad because people can slander campaigners and spread rumors. 3. I get most of my information from television, class, and the internet. 4. Yes 5. Because it is easier to follow and I can hear about things in a more understandable way.

In "Path to the Presidency: How have the Internet and social media changed campaigns?," John Vettese discusses the impact of social media on campaigning for elections. The internet and social media have helped presidential candidates more than they have hurt them. For instance, media makes it easier for presidential candidates to reach people in terms of fund-raising and communicating their ideas with the citizens of this country in a cheaper and more effective way. Also, I get my information about candidates mostly through social media. As a part of the younger generation, most of our lives are run by media. Through the use of media, it makes it easier for me to learn more about the candidate. On the other hand, Old-style campaigning is still important because most adults that are older, like Mr. Fite, don't use social media like the younger generation does. In conclusion, internet and social media, as well as old-campaigning techniques, both help presidential candidates in one way or the other.

In our world communication has transformed dramatically. Internet and Social Media plays a huge role in our world today, from Facebook to Twitter, Social Media has been a huge impact in our generation. Social Media also plays a big role in the way political candidates campaign. I believe that the Internet and Social Media are effective ways to campaign because it is an effective way to spread information about the candidates to a lot of people in a short amount of time. In our materialistic world we rely on technology for almost everything we do, from entertaining our selves to catch up on the latest news. Technology also connects the world together. You could be in the U.S.A but be able to communicate with people in Russia, India, etc. This proving that Social Media is effective way to campaign to millions within seconds. I think these changes have been made for the better because we can communicate the campaigns information to a wide variety of people in half the time. I personally get my information by watching the news or checking the news app on my phone. Because I check my phone a lot through the day, I also end up looking at the political news that shows up on my notifications, because of this I have been able to pay more information to campaigns. In conclusion the Internet and Social Media has played a huge impact in our political society. It is also one of the most used media in our world today.

To this day, the internet is able to provide a countless number of sources that are not necessarily bad, but are also informative and free; the internet is used by millions of people everyday, and putting messages that support any type of political campaigns is a very effective way to get a message to spread around, because people that use social media often share things that they find interesting, thus the message continues to grow and gain popularity. Most people including myself get information from the internet, because it's an easy way to get information, and most of the time you can access these informative sources from your own house. Although some social media sources try to get people to start spreading negative information about certain campaigns, most of the time you get to read interesting information about some candidates.

The way people communicate has evolved greatly over the past few decades. The internet has played an increasingly large role in the way political candidates campaign. Since the advancement of mobile technology and introduction of social media, candidates can now spread their influence in many more ways. The internet has spread to more people and is easily accessible to most, if not all, people. This means that candidates can campaign to many more people than ever before. Social media is a very effective way to campaign. I, personally, believe that these changes are for the better. I get my political info from either my crazy conservative mother on the internet. Since information on the candidates is so much easier to access on the internet, it is also much easier to pay attention to. In conclusion, social media and the internet have positively impacted the political scene by making information easier to access, and letting candidates campaign easier and more frequently.

In today's day and age, the use of the internet has revolutionized presidential campaigns over the last three elections. The use of various social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook allows candidates to reach the younger age group (those 30 and under) and represent their opinions. The majority of the information I receive about candidates comes from social media and news article. As the use of technology progressed throughout these recent years I have paid more attention to campaigns primarily because the information is easily available. As stated in the article however, the old tactics cannot be abandoned but the new ones will be useful for decades to come.

The Internet and social media are a great way to campaign. In this generation, where most young people are the internet is great, but I think that you should also focus on traditional campaigning. Most people who vote are older and may not have social media. Most of the time I get my information from the News channels or social media because of the easy access.

Yes, i do believe social media and the internet is a successful way to campaign and interact with voters. It is definitely good for the country to all be active in elections and campaigns. It spreads information fast and effectively. The only down side of the internet is that people can spread rumors and create fake information for people to follow. I get a lot of my information from TV and the internet. Yes, I do pay closer attention to campaigns since the information is easily accessible since its more in front of my face. 1) The internet and social media are very effective ways to campaign. This is because of the fact that candidates are able to connect with their supporters through the use of internet media. 2) Yes, I believe that these changes have been for the better because they have connected us more as American citizens, and allowed politicians to express their views on certain issues as well as their agendas. 3) I personally get all of my information about candidates through the news, social media, and people that I am around. 4) Yes, I play closer attention to the campaigns because more information is easily available. Internet and social media are effective ways to campaign because it helps us to be more engaged and pay more attention into whats happening with the candidate, by always seeing posts and tweets about whats going on. I do think these changes are for the better because more and more people will be able to see the campaigning on the go or waiting in line on their phones and other technology. We don't have to worry about changing campaigning too much because we still have older people who don't use social media and will still do the old style vote routine. I get my information of the candidates by talking with my dad, Twitter , Facebook ,AP government, CNN student news, or watching the news channel. I pay close attention now because I'm in an AP government class which changes how I see the elections now then before because I'm starting to understand more and more about government.

The Internet and social media are effective ways to campaign, but older people might have a disadvantage because they are not used to this new technology. There should still be old-style campaigning for older adults, but new-style campaigning is advantageous for younger people. For this era, these changes have somewhat been for the better. I get my information about candidates on the nightly news. The internet has become an incredibly effective way to gather both voters and money. Recently, Presidential candidate has created an incredibly effective campaign off the average donation amount of $27. Personally, I believe these changes are largely positive for America. To an extent it allows anyone who wants to to run, and makes it easier to gain support. I generally get my information from the candidate's site. This election especially, media has made me pay more attention to the election between Trump, Clinton, and Sanders. Right now most of the attention is because of the antics, not because I particularly think any of them would make a good president.

In modern day today It is good and effective except the older generation of people, which is a lot of the people who still vote, don't use social media but as the younger generation of the nation become the older generation the social media will be much more effective. I think these ways are for the better for the younger generation but not the older generation which is a big issue with the candidates today. I get all of my information about the candidates from their debates in which they do. I pay attention to the campaigns more because the campaigns get more and more serious and important and as I will be voting in less then 3 years so I need to be on top of things like this.

This allows politicians to reach a demographic in a way that could not be possible before. Do you think these changes have been for the better? Yes, because as times change, technology changes, campaigns must change. Do you play closer attention to the campaigns since more information is easily accessible? Why or why not? Internet is a very effective way to campaign, for a younger audience. The older people, who do vote the most, may not have social media. It appeals to us young folk because we are always on our phones, yet the older people aren't and may not have any form of social media. I get most of my information from the internet and my email. I do find myself becoming more interested in the campaigns now that I understand what is going on and I'm on social media a lot. Many people today have access to the internet and the media. Because of this, many are able to take part in the political actions they normally may not have had time for. For example, if someone doesn't have a television around and they want to check how their favored politician is fairing, they could pull out the smart form and check. These changes are, for the most part, for the better. However, there are some places that prefer to have someone speak to them in person rather than over the internet. Not everybody has internet or can utilize it. I, for one, normally get my information off of the internet or from my parents. In our American democracy, almost all citizens get their news and information from the media. Media ultimately shape how we interpret and observe political information, such as election coverage and other political events. I think that in a developed and large country like America, the media plays an important role in the campaign and election processes. The most significant role of the media in a democracy is that it allows citizens to be informed in order to make educated political choices, which plays a crucial role in the political process. The media, therefore, must do a thorough and impartial job when informing the public on all government activities and political events. It also allows politicians to communicate faster and reach citizens in a more targeted manner and vice versa, without the intermediate role of mass media. Reactions, feedback, conversations and debates are generated online as well as support and participation for offline events. On the other hand, media can also promote false information and be used to undermine a candidate and his/or political platform. Any political messages posted to personal networks are multiplied when shared, which allow new audiences to be reached. Thus, the Internet and social media are by all means, effective ways to campaign as long as the potential candidates are aware that quite often, the political information will be incorrect yet easily accessible.

Social media has made more people more politically active. It has become more effective and has changed the way people think about politics. The change has made more people active and now they could go on Facebook or Twitter to know about a candidate. Based off the elections in 2012 and the one currently going on now. People now debate online about where they side on matter. Especially since now a lot more young adults participate. They make all information more accessible and easier. Its the age of technology, people go online a lot. They get news faster than ever especially on a candidate since its election time.

Since social media has become such a big impact on the world, the internet is a very effective way to campaign because with the amount of people constantly on social media apps, campaigning ads are viewed much more. As years have passed, young teens and adults have become more involved in politics and with this, they've become more influential. This has changed for the better because candidates can use the internet to gain the interest of young teens, adults, and even the elderly. Using this method of campaigning, candidates can effectively gain voters and change opinions. Personally, I get information on candidates through Twitter and Instagram. With being on theses apps constantly, I have become more educated on political issues. Since these sources are available for me, I have payed closer attention to the presidential elections and have been more engaged in political activity. This is because I have easy access and information is spread very quickly through the media world. The internet has indeed effected presidential elections and campaigns, and has helped candidates immensely.

The internet has catalyzed campaigns so to bring more attention to a candidate. This is evident in the 2016 elections as candidates that have been using social media have been doing a lot better in the polls and in state primaries. It has become a lot less expensive and a lot more effective to send a tweet to the general public or to make a youtube video and share it on the internet than to make a public commercial that takes millions of dollars to air on different channels. However it can also backfire on a candidate because if he says something that hurts his campaign it will be permanently on the internet.

The internet and social media are an effective way to campaign but it will become more effective as younger generations grow up. Right now all these teens are able to keep up with politics by using twitter or other forms of social media but they aren't able to vote. I get a lot of my information about candidates from social media. Social media has made it easier for teens to get information on politics because they are more likely to go on social media on their phone then watch the news or read the newspaper.

Internet and social are very effective ways to campaign. They get to the younger people more, not just teens, I mean the younger adults in their 20s and 30s. Those are the main people using social media these days and they're ALWAYS on it, so it'd be a good way to reach out to them. When I get information about candidates, it's either through the radio on the way to school in the morning, or on social media. Sometimes I pat more attention to the campaigns, but sometimes I'm just not interested. This year though, I've been VERY interested in what's going on with these campaigns. The candidates this time are very different than what we've had before and I'm very interested in who's going to become our new president. Whoever that may be, I'm not sure that I'll really like them because I'm not overly impressed with these candidates. They're kind of embarrassing...

In the United States of America, the use of technology continues to rise, and with the use of digital technologies comes the use of all sorts of social media. For example, most, if not, all, candidates have a twitter account, facebook account, instagram account, and many others. A vast majority of the population of the United States of America uses social media, and especially, the younger population. The younger population of America tends to not be as educated about candidates and their views, so the use of social media opens up that chance for younger people to understand presidential candidates' views and ideas.

In today's world, social media is the most effective way to campaign. Candidates can now reach out to millions of people within seconds, for free. This has been a great and positive impact to the campaign trail. When I go to look at news about a candidate, I go social media to check what Trump has been up to. It is better than going on the bias news. Now that I can follow all the candidates online, it makes us as voters closer to the candidates. We know more about them, than before. The internet is an extremely effect way to campaign and has a clear effect on a candidates campaign. The internet allows for a candidate to allow for the people to directly ask him questions or to feel as if they're communicating with them directly which give a better feeling of unity which in turn makes the voters more likely to follow and support them. These changes are a whole lot better than the old system which was really impersonal compared to this system, as you can get info about a candidate directly from them on any of the larger social media websites. Not to mention, since information is so easily available, you can get involved in the politics of it without even knowing due to its prevalence in the internet.

It helps so much because it's easily accesible. If I didn't have such an easy way to it, I would never see it because I rarely have time to watch it on television. With information at my fingertips, I can delve into it and really understand it. There are also thousands of different viewpoints for every type of voter so you really can understand and plunge into whatever you would like to. Although, you do have to be careful of biases on the internet. With all the different viewpoints, you can get biased sources. The internet has had an obvious impact on the presidential campaign. I believe that the impact the internet has had has been good. The people feel more involved in politics and are more likely to get involved if they think their voices are bring heard. The times have changed and have gradually gotten easier to spread the word of what you want. When newspapers and radios got into politics, candidates could then get their story out faster and to a bigger pool of people. Raising money through to internet and saving money by posting ads is just the next step the politicians are using. The internet has greatly benefited the presidential candidates during campaigns.

The issue discussed in this article is about how the internet has changed campaigns. Social media has made a largely positive impact on a candidates campaign. The candidate can use social media in order to directly speak to his voters. They can also raise money in a more sufficient way through the use if pay pals and other sources. They also use their own websites in order to utilize videos versus ads that are very costly. I also believe that Scott Talan got it right when he said the "old media is not dead." The use of old media can still be effective but it is easier to use new technology.

This article is explaining some of the changes in presidential elections has gone through the years with new technology and social media. I think that the internet has been a great way for candidates to get their views across. More people use the internet than read the newspapers, generally, so it's an effective use of campaigning. Fundraising on the internet is very helpful too because it allows the people to give freely rather than the candidates fundraising team to call or ask more personally. I get most of my information on MSN.com or twitter because I follow Barack Obama on Twitter. He sends tweets on his issues, and his millions of followers read it. I do pay closer attention to the campaigns now that I am more informed. Old school campaigning still needs to be around, but I feel the internet will continue to be a big part in elections to come, in a positive way.

This article talks about the changes in campaigns and how internet has influenced the way others campaign. There are no actual articles in the Constitution that reference campaigning but it could be covered under the freedom of speech. Since it is a political speech, through past precedent, it would have more protection. It talks about the changes and ways people can now campaign 24/7 and have more direct contact with the candidates themselves. People can find out more information that they want to, for example 'Questions for candidates came from Facebook users'. Overall I feel this is a positive thing because the voters can have a stronger connection to the candidates and their policies. Some may see it as a negative force, and that it deters from actual political matters and focuses more on ever-changing public opinion. However I don't believe this is the case, and the opportunity to ask questions and find more information online actually puts the focus back on policy and less on media image.

The issue is how the internet and social media have effected campaigns. I think that from reading this article, the internet and social media have only benefited both the people and the candidates' campaigns. Twitter and Facebook allow the candidates to speak directly to the people. These social media sites along with YouTube and Vimeo are literally free advertising. Also, as the article said, it makes fundraising pretty easy. By setting up a PayPal sort of thing and just allowing people to click a button to vote, candidates can make money with ease. Old-style campaigning is great and still necessary to the campaign, but the internet is just amazing. Another great thing about social media is that the candidates or people working for the candidates can look through the tweets and posts about their last debate or something of the like, and look at the feedback. Candidates can learn what the people want without leaving the little bus they have to travel in.

The issue of the article is how the internet and social media (technology) have changed media campaigns. The fact that technology is vastly growing in regards to campaigning for president is obvious as it shows that when George W. Bush and Al Gore vied for the White House in 2000, the Internet was in its early stages as a campaign tool. The article references electronic fundraising, which could also tie in with the Who Should Pay for the Internet speak out blog. TV is very expensive, but the internet is a free service, so it is extremely easy and considerably cheaper for candidates to put ads on YouTube. Facebook, Twitter, all social media sites are making it easier to campaign and raise money. I do not however, believe that they should completely replace old-fashioned campaigning in person. I think the last quote mentioned is pretty funny, and true. I prefer to get my information on candidates in person, if at all possible. I understand that is rare for presidential elections, but I think the best way to get to know candidates would be to actually hear them speak. I think I do pay closer attention to the campaigns since more info is easily accessible. In conclusion, this article has shown through multiple examples, such as Obama in 2008, that social media is an effective way to campaign, and I think these changes come for better and worse. Social media helps expand awareness of the presidential elections, but some sources are very biased and unreliable.

As the article says, "Candidates are increasing their social media presence." It is very good that candidates are doing this because they are able to give out information anytime and anywhere. I believe Candidates still need to have face to face interaction with the people. I do agree with Leif-Axel with the statement, "these new ways of campaigning can allow more people to interact with politicians." I agree with this because it is true, if you send a tweet to a politician, they will more than likely see it and maybe you could make the impact on his thoughts. The issue in this article is how technology is changing campaigning. The article tells us how campaigning is changing to social media and websites. This isn't a bad thing it just helps a candidate get their name out there. Also having cheaper ways of campaigning on the internet and making it easier to raise money for campaigns allows for more people to run for president. Also as Tyler says the social media could be a hazard. It could be a hazard because they will lose privacy so their will still be campaigning with the old style like the article says.

Technology has always had its 'up's and 'down's. The use of social media in politics does have its downsides. Among these are the loss of traditional news platforms and a more scattered media. Another change brought about by this trend is the renewed privacy of public figures. If they report their own news through twitter, then they don't need to worry about "pesky reporters." Politicians will, however, also lose privacy. So, the role of technology in news media is not as a hazard, but rather as a catalyst. Which may still be a hazard depending on how you view it.

Internet, social media, and other new forms of technology are effective ways of campaigning to citizens. These changes have happened for the better because these new ways of campaigning can allow more people to interact with politicians' campaigns and other parts of politics. Although for the same reason "old-fashioned" forms of campaigning should not be lessened or gotten rid of, because if they are, less people will have access to political campaigns. "Old-fashioned" forms of campaigning usually give more information than social media for example. I get most of my information about candidates from online news articles. When used right, the Internet and social media are really effective ways to campaign. Through the social media it's becoming easier for the candidate to communicate with the public. On the other side, it may also become harder for him\her, because media appears to be everywhere which can be a disadvantage (as it was a disadvantage for Mitt Romney as he got recorded by saying things he wouldn't have said in public). I get pretty much all my information from the internet, because that's the best way to see things from different viewpoints. But I agree that the candidate should not only focus on how to reach the public, but also on reaching people personally, like the article says, through old-style campaigning. Reaching people through TV ads and newspaper articles is still a totally different thing than reaching them by campaigning in person.

Technology is always changing. New forms of media outlets are developed which allow more people to access the media more easily. When FDR started using the radio to connect with the people, critics said that it could never replace older forms of media. Using social media is an effective way to campaign. It helps you reach a broader audience of voters who can't always watch a debate on television or any other political event. More and more citizens are using the Internet as a source for their news and using the social media sites helps get their attention more. These changes are for the better because as times are changing the ways of politics are going to change as well. Just like when political campaigns began using television, which was a major change, using the Internet is going to benefit the electorate in the long run. Although these technologies may be many Americans way of getting the information about candidates, there are some that like watching the news more. I am one of those people. Technology has advanced over the years and has made it easier for people to find out information. Social media use is very common to today's average American citizen. Compared to previous years, social media has gotten more involved with politics and letting people know what's going on in a faster and more convenient way. The internet is a very effective way to campaign especially when it comes to popular sites like Facebook, Twitter, and even YouTube in which millions of people go on and use everyday. As Kirsten Kukowski said, "Twitter has become how news gets started, and how that news is amplified". I personally spend most of my time on the internet. The internet does make it easier for me to find out the information on the campaigns since they use familiar sites that people enjoy visiting and find interesting. This also lets the public interact with each other and find out others' views on the various subjects.

The social media has become a great way to spread information and policical views to a large percentage of people. It gives the voters greater accessibility to the Presidential candidates or anyone running for an office. It also saves a lot of money being able to post something online for free rather than having to dish out loads of money just to get it on tv. These new technologies give the political figures a real opportunity to communicate with the community in a way that they have never been able to before. The social networks such as facebook and twitter have shown large outcomes in reactions to political debates. It shows that our country is growing and taking use of our advances in technology. Although these types of media are effective, they should not completely do away with the old-style campaigning. It is important that they still go out and make their impression on the american people in real life too, rather than say over a computer. Old-campaigning tends to give a plethora of information, while it may not be that way with new campaigning that mostly sum up thoughts or use sounds bites. The new way of campaigning has brought America a long way, but that does not mean they should do away with the old American tradition

Technology has indeed helped campaigns by helping get the information out there and helping people learn more about their potential candidates. The use of social websites, television, and campaign sites is were much of the population finds their information, I know that when I missed a debate I would watch it on youtube, which brings me to the point that we should not get rid of face to face speeches and debates but simply use technology to enhance that experience by allowing it to be watched whenever convenient for the voter. Ever sense the Nixon Kennedy debate which was proven to be greatly dictated for the first time by television the country has been moving to the point we are at now. The internet is the most effective way of campaigning. However, people shouldn't only rely on the internet when focusing on politics. People should read newspapers more in addition to using the internet because through newspapers, the main issue is explored more deeply rather than all of the "interesting, but not necessarily important" things at hand. I spend a great majority of my time on the internet and this is how I get my information, though. I wouldn't say that I pay more attention to campaigns just because more information is easily accessible. I still am not fully aware of what is going on in the government itself and I don't have the knowledge that I need about politics to understand campaigning fully. However, as I get older and am participating more in politics, I am beginning to understand what politics means to me.

Today media has evolved to the online sensation, and has brought politics to a whole new world. The politicians running can get their messages out in a faster, easier, cost-efficient way. They also are making more funds by all of their followers and supporters. However, the internet is not just for the politicians, but for the citizens themselves. With this online sensation people do not get necessarily better informed, but they feel more connected. People can access their computer and get their opinions on what their views are, and what other people are saying. Twitter, for example, has blown up during the last presidential debate and has seemed to have more public interest in the media of the internet. Media on the internet has come far, and there is no telling of how big of a position it can come in deciding political elections.,

The advanced ways of using technology in campaigning is very effective. Since our society is becoming more and more technologically sound, it is a bright idea as a campaigner to keep up. If using the internet is one way to get yourself out there, then do it. As an average American, I am seeing more and more on the internet. Facebook ads, for example, come up to promote someone in a certain way and sometimes I look into what is being posted. However, I would not say that many people pay more attention to it just because it is right in front of them; they still may not be interested.

With the majority of today's citizens especially the younger generations using social networking sites, social media is definitely an effective way to campaign and inform people on politics. I get the greater majority of my information from the internet as well. Yes I would have to say that I do pay closer attention to the presidential campaigns and such things now that the information is more easily accessible, due to the fact that it is right there in front of you when you get online.

The social media has changed the way that candidates campaign, and has been a good way to involve people in politics. Many people are on the internet or on their phone constantly, so people can be more involved in what is happening in politics. Think about it, did we imagine in earlier years that the new President would be tweeting during the Inauguration? Also, a lot of the money that campaign's made was done through the internet. The social media is making it easier for people to access politics. I personally don't use the internet or social media very much, so I usually use the television to get the latest news about campaigning. However, the results show that many people are connected to politics and the candidates better through social media and the internet than ever before.

Due to how technology is becoming increasingly popular in the public in any age group, many people are using newer technology to learn about politics and campaigners are using this to their advantage. If more people are involved and its easier for campaigners to get their word out and have people be more involved, then do so. People need to be more involved in politics these days. I'm assuming that most Americans are like me and don't have the time to sit down at home and watch a debate on TV with how many commercials there are etc, so in simple terms it's easier for me to find out about politics on the internet since I'm always on doing school work as well or on a social website. I do agree that print media is becoming increasingly less popular and people are focusing on different topics these days due to media. Media does have its benefits for campaigners, but its also stopping people from looking at the big picture and doing what might have been done in past generations.

The internet and the media has changed the politic campaign dramatically is the past decade. The internet gives you the ability to check any type of media thorough it. You are able to check on the debate at anytime and voice your opinion. The average person now days in much more technology savvy then ten years ago. We can individually help the campaign we support b being able to donate online. Every year the average citizen is exposed to more and new media, which allows us to stay more informed about the campaigns. It is really impressive in how the Internet and social media has changed the way campaigns are now conducted.

I believe this new wave of online and technological campaigning has become a very effective form or getting candidate information out there for the general public. They have definitely been useful for people to get more political information. In today's society the internet and social media is how people not only communicate but also send out information. There are thousands of people online at a time. Using these sources to campaign is one of the most effective ways to campaign. People around the country are all able to access the internet one way or another. Whether it be at their own home or at a public library, citizens can access the internet. Information can travel in seconds across the web and can easily go viral. When campaigners use this source to campaign they are getting their information spread out at a quickening rate. As society becomes more technologically forward, the less we use "old school" things like the newspaper. To keep up with the changing society campaigners must keep up with the latest social medias like twitter. Having campaigns online is a cheaper, faster, and overall better way to send out candidate information. To top it off, "Of the more than $600 million raised in that campaign, Obama campaign aides said $500 million was from online contributions." If these campaigners are getting their message across to more people at a faster rate and doing it without spending less money, and then making money, it is a better change. Personally, I got a lot of my information online through twitter and campaigner's websites. It is a lot easier than sitting down and watching the news. Instead of "fireside chats" that Roosevelt created, President Obama could make a youtube video that updates the U.S. That way people can re-watch his updates and keep up within minutes. That would be easier for busy people. They would be able to watch it at their own time. Sometimes I just need highlights. It allows me to keep closer attention because I can get an update on a debate within minutes and fill myself in.

I think that they are effective and a turning point in campaigns today. This is because people get most of the information about campaigns from the internet and social media because of campaign ads and news stories. There is always opinion polls too on news websites and it kind of persuades people to vote. I think its been for the better because in my opinion it allows more people to get involved with elections and vote. I personally get information about candidates from TV. Also, i pay closer attention to campaigns because when its election time for a candidate, news would constantly change so its important for me to keep close to a candidate just to see whats new or whats changed about the election.

I think that they are very effective ways to campaign. People, especially young adults, are on the internet more than they watch television or read the paper. This makes it a very effective way to campaign. I personally received the majority of my information about the candidates from the internet, whether it was commercial websites or polling sites or what not. I don't think I would've known nearly as much as I did about the campaign if it wasn't for the internet. It is very easily accessible and supplies many different perceptions and outlooks on the debates and the candidates themselves. When I was on a website like YouTube, there would be a campaign ad or a short clip of a debate shown on the homepage, so I'd watch it just to keep myself in the flow. This is a very useful way of campaigning for the candidates due to the increasing liking of shaping young adults opinions.

Social media is an effective way to campaign. There are so many people out there today that have social media websites, and if this is going to be their way of getting their information about candidates it should be utilized. People should be informed about the candidates before they vote, and if this is the best way for them to get their information than social media is an effective way to campaign. These changes have brought about a definite increase in the use of technology, which in my opinion is a great resource. If the ability to get information to masses of people in a timely manner is available, then it should be used. I get most of my information about candidates through the television or twitter. I can definitely say that I have been more aware of campaign issues since the technology has increased. This year I did pay closer attention to the news regarding the election, but I think that is because I am going into the real world soon and these issues affect me.

I am of the personal believe that the internet and social media are effective ways to campaign. They may in fact be the most effective way to campaign in the time that we are living in. People are accessing the internet and are on social media websites all the time now. As well, I think that this change isn't for the better, nor for the worse. It just is what it is you could say. I personally get my information from multiple sources: internet, debates, word of mouth, etc. I don't pay closer attention only because I was already paying close attention as myself and my family enjoy politics. I think that using the internet and social media is an exciting new way to campaign and in another fifty years, there'll probably be something new that the political hopefuls campaign through. These forms of technology are just becoming more common and accessible for the average American citizen. If that helps them to be involved in politics and become more informed citizens, than we should be using these means more often. As with most people, I research the majority information on the internet and see the rest on television. With the fact I'm already on the internet during the day, it is easier to learn about what candidates are doing and that makes it more appealing to the younger generations. While these changes do have their advantages, I agree with Judy Woodruff from PBS NewsHour. Things are less personable and people are steering away from traditional means.

Social media is an effective and necessary way to campaign in today's society. Using the tools that will grab the attention of the average United States citizen is a smart campaigning technique. Technology is not just up and coming in America today, it is here and using such an outlet to campaign in is bound to get a broader range of Americans to pay attention. Younger Americans will get more involved, theoretically, if ads are displayed on high traffic social media websites that are used quite often by these citizens such as Facebook and Twitter. Television ads should not be dismissed, but more and more internet adds should be utilized.

I believe that social media is an effective way to campaign because voters are not spending their time in front of the TV as much as they used too. Instead they are stuck in their phones and in the computers, usually one way or another, on a social media website such as Facebook or Twitter. If a candidate wants to campaign to a large amount of people, then social media is where the money to advertise would be best spent.

The Internet and social media have been effecting the campaigns for years now. More and more people watch the news, or look on the Internet everyday. Yes, it may appear more to the younger people, but who looks at a magazine or a newspaper without first looking at the news? The Internet? I find nearly all of my information, including the debates, on the news firsthand. Yes the "Old media isn't dead," but it is rarely even used now. Technology is more efficient and effective, and is used all around the world, even if you are in a different country and don't even want to watch the U.S. Presidency debate, it's there on the news. But somehow, I think the fact that the debate is on the World Wide Web and the other social media, is the point. People who aren't allowed to vote in their country, or if there are people on a business trip and didn't have the chance to vote, they can see the debates and how it affects them, or how it would affect them if it were there country.

The internet and social media are certainly more effective ways of campaigning. Whether or not these changes are for the better remains to be seen. The internet is indeed an effective way to campaign because of how easily it spreads ideas and facts. This has improved communication ten-fold and therefore allowing the person running for President to be able to influence of the people with ease. I personally use the internet to learn about the candidates just like the majority of the U.S citizens. In the past elections, I didn't know much about them partly because I was young and partly because I didn't know where to learn about them. Now with the many social medias like Facebook and Twitter, I can just turn on my laptop and find information about the election without even asking. I know this has happened to many young adults in the U.S.. Because of growth of the number of people using the internet, this has been a great benefit for the people campaigning to be president, although even though they have this easy way to campaign, it is still beneficial to use old methods of spreading the words because it shows the people that they are able to work to achieve what they want.

When someone is watching tv, or listening to the radio, they actually listen and take in what they are listening to. If something about the campaign is on a social media network, people are more likely to listen to what the people are saying, because they are actually friends with the people voicing their opinion. Some of the good things about internet are that you can reach out to more people and let them know what you are thinking, because there are more people now who has TV in their houses and can learn about more resent news. But there is a disadvantage in making these ads because you have to spend so much money making the ad and even more money just to put it on TV. Internet and social media have affected campaigns tremendously, and the numbers show. The amount of current eligible voters who are involved with politics is under 50% and I believe with increased integration of social media coupled with Internet more and more younger people, who are actively using social mediums such as Facebook and Twitter, are getting into politics. This foreshadows a more educated American public and more involvement in government. A lot of people who are not able to comprehend what is going on during presidential debates can seek an easier way of understanding, a way everyone is involved- social media. The social media has completely changed the way the presidential campaign has run. The campaign has turned into a money making popularity contest with attack ads being aired on t.v. daily trying to get voters attention. The day of propaganda and lies has been brought to a new light under these new ads. On top of that with all of the new social media tools such as Facebook, and Twitter, a younger generation has been targeted. Social media are one of the main attractions throughout the nation. Campaigning through social media is a very effective method because the message is relayed through different forms; TV, online, radio, etc. Although there are many traditional forms of media and campaigning through newspapers and magazines, nowadays electronically posted media is viewed more frequently. While the newspaper is sent out daily, or weekly, the social media can be viewed and updated constantly, which is one of the many reasons why most people choose to refer to an online source than to wait around for the next article in the paper.

I think the internet and social media are very effective ways to campaign. I think these changes have good and bad aspects to them. I get my information about candidates from TV. Since it is easier to get information about candidates, everyone has an opinion and everyone wants to be heard so your going to hear someones opinion whether you want it or not. Although it is easier to get information, a lot of people still do not know the true and correct facts about what is going on. So I think that is the biggest downside to social media.
