How big of a problem do you think illegal immigration is?

Wrapping up our first World News Week here on Student Voices, we turn to a hot topic the world around – immigration.

The state of Arizona was heavily criticized for passing the nation’s strictest anti-illegal immigration law in 2010. In Europe, politicians have fiercely opposed an increase in emigration of Muslims from Turkey and Northern Africa.

But last week, a report released by the German Marshall Fund (GMF), a nonpartisan research group focusing on transatlantic issues, showed that people in the United States, Canada and six European countries (the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain) think immigration is far more widespread, and consider it a bigger problem, than it actually is.

While history tells lots of tales of explorers circling the globe, settling in new locations, immigration to the United States as we know it did not begin in earnest until the 1600s when the first settlement was made at Jamestown, Va., in 1607. Over the next four centuries, waves of people sailed in – slaves brought in by wealthy landowners in the 1700s, Europeans escaping famine and oppression in the 1800s, and people seeking better job opportunities in the 20th century and today.
First, immigration in general – legal or illegal. In Italy, immigrants make up only 7 percent of its national population. But respondents to the GMF survey, on average, guessed that the figure was more like 25 percent. Similar gaps between perception and reality exist in Spain (respondents guessed 21 percent; the reality is 14 percent) and the United States (respondents guessed 39 percent; reality is 14 percent).

There are also misperceptions and negative views of illegal immigration. In the United States, 58 percent of people surveyed thought that most immigrants were here illegally. In reality, less than one-third of all immigrants are here illegally. In Europe, majorities of those surveyed thought that illegal immigrants caused increases in crime – 56 percent of Italian respondents and 55 percent of French respondents, for instance.

Last, those surveyed overwhelmingly felt their country was doing a poor job of handling immigration – 73 percent in the U.S., 70 percent in the U.K., 61 percent in Spain, 58 percent in France, and 53 percent in the Netherlands.

So, what do these numbers mean? Why is it a big deal that so many people have negative views of immigration?

The disconnect between perception and reality can be dangerous. For one thing, it promotes a world view that is xenophobic – fearful of outsiders. It can also have racist undertones. If people knew the accurate numbers, they might feel differently about immigration. (The GMF survey actually showed this.)

But people are entitled to their views. If an individual has xenophobic or racist beliefs, they’re not something that’s easy to change. Indeed, many of the fears about immigration in Europe have to do with cultural intrusion – whereas in the United States, people are more worried (outwardly, anyway) about the possible loss of economic opportunities to illegal immigrants.

The bigger concern is how leaders react to people’s views. Politicians in Spain and Germany have made vitriolic anti-immigration speeches that have been called fascist. In the U.S., states from coast to coast are considering strict laws in response to immigration fears – some laws, like in Arizona, that critics say intrude on people’s rights.

Some also say that not only are these laws and political stances oppressive and potentially unconstitutional, but they also take time and energy that lawmakers might use to confront other problems their countries face.

On the other hand, some might say the disconnect revealed by the GMF survey doesn’t make the situation different. If there is an issue – say, illegal immigration –that you view as a huge problem, but you find out it’s not as huge of a thing as you thought, is it still a problem?

What do you think?

How big of a problem do you think illegal immigration is? Does the disconnect revealed by the GMF survey change things? Do you think a more positive view of immigration would affect legislation? Do you think elected officials around the world should spend as much time on immigration? Join the discussion!

I think immigration in our country has always been a big issue. Immigration is a main factor right now because there is little to know jobs, but in all reality immigrants are doing jobs that most Americans won’t do. Yes immigration should be a controversial topic but it shouldn’t be a deciding factor on who a person votes for because of the way they view on immigration. Officials should focus on immigration but should limit the time spent because there is way more important issues to be focused on.

Over the years the United States has seen a big increase of illegal aliens. As a US citizen they should get no privileges and they should have no rights at all because they do not exist in our world. It is also 100 % not fair that they skate on by without paying taxes or paying all sorts of other bills. These "aliens" have taken jobs from tax paying people who were actually born on US soil and then do not contribute a dime to our government that is desperately in need of money since we are having financial issues we are having today. If the United States government does not seek any change in the near future you will see our dept. increase and then our economy will be in worse shape than it is today. So our government should have stricter rules on illegal aliens for example. If they catch an illegal alien they should put them in jail then have them transferred to wherever they came from and then they should never be allowed back into our country. Or they can keep letting this happen and then they will see the problem that is affecting our economy.

Illegal immigration has changed the way people view the US. In my opinion Illegal aliens should not have the same privileges that we, US citizens have. Immigration has over ruled the job openings that were established for American citizens leaving people that were born and legal in the United States jobless. Some business owners hire illegal immigrants before they will hire American citizens so they won’t have to pay the full wage. The constitution says that if you are born in the US you are a US citizen. As wrong as this may be, many aliens come to the United States to have children and as there generation grows their children get free education along with the title of a US citizen. This is a big topic in our society that many generations are having to deal with and as our government complains about this issue, they do nothing to pursue there verbal about fixing this problem.

Immigrants are "destroying" our economy! Let's take for instance Arizona...illegal immigration is destroying Arizona so much so that Arizona took in tax revenue of $1.64 billion from immigrant workers while the amount the state spent on immigrants was approximately $1.41 billion leaving a net benefit of $222.6 million to the state coffers. That's only what they contribute to Arizona’s revenue. They also pay national income taxes and social security taxes. Two-thirds of illegal immigrants pay Medicare, Social Security and personal income taxes. And while they pay in, under US law they are forbidden to receive the benefits for which they pay. The only services that illegals can still get are emergency medical care and K-12 education. Oh and let us not forget how illegal immigrants are just MILKING our oh so delicate Social Security system which is in danger of imminent collapse. Last year, the revenues from fake numbers used by illegal immigrants— that the Social Security administration stashes in the “earnings suspense file” — added up to 10 percent of the Social Security surplus. The file is growing, on average, by more than $50 billion a year.

I think that it is a big problem because they come up here and they end up creating crime and drug problems making it harder for the local police officers. They also create making are taxes higher and costing us more money. SEND THEM BACK TO MEXICO!!!!!!!!!!!

I think illegal immigration is one of this countries biggest problems. Illegal immigrants don't pay tax, they take jobs of those who do pay tax and have the right to live here.

In my opinion, illegal immigration is a big deal. With all the illegal immigrants we are losing jobs which mean there is a higher rate of unemployment in the US. This is leading to the problem of our economy. It wont get better if we have illegal immigrants aren’t paying taxes. The United States will have less money to spend for the better of America. Most people in the US think that illegal immigrants are a big deal. According to a survey by Santa Maria Times.com people in the United States think that 39% of the US is illegal immigrants. In fact, it is actually 14%. This is showing that Americans think that there is a bigger issue of immigration that it really is. I think that it is a big issue. If we solve the problem with immigration then we end up solving more problems. The unemployment rate will go down and we will have less people on welfare.

Illegal immigration is a huge problem in terms of the tremendous amount of money spent by governments to "protect our borders", where it could be put to better use for health care, education, and even cut the budget deficit. As for the German Marshall Fund, the percentages are biased since the number of illegal immigrants is inflated from the real statistics that have been reported by these countries. Officials will have their time used wisely if they focus on another conflict their governments are facing. In the United States society, you are asked for proper documentation to get a job, to enroll in school, and to have the right to drive in this country. There is absolutely no way illegal immigrants can overcome these obstacles. It is obvious that they do not have the rights and that if they are here, they are only here to be beneficial to the United States. United States citizens should not be xenophobic since this land was founded by outsiders. CASE DISMISSED

Illegal immigration is a major problem in The USA. Some citizens in this country may not see it as a problem, but if you are a student planning on going to college, or a worker paying taxes, you've been effected. Juggling two jobs and maintaining high grades in school, I was furious when I filled out my FAFSA application and was told I would only get $3,700, compared to my friend, whose parents are illegal immigrants, receiving $21,000. Not only do illegal immigrants make it unfair when trying to obtain higher education, but I find it awfully unfair when I work 25-30 hours a week knowing that some people that get my tax reductions are only getting it to support their family that has hopped the border. When saying that illegal immigration should not be allowed is not being judgmental, racist or stereotypical, it's saying that “I am a tax payer and citizen of this country and I refuse to let you use me and/or my money.” Being young and seeing that my country is letting these people take our money is ridiculous, but we sit here and ask why we are in this recession. Take a wild guess. We have between 12 and 20 million illegal immigrants walking around our country using our money. Yes, these illegal immigrants are taking our jobs, jobs that some of us need, but that is beside the point. THEY ARE WORKING OUR JOBS BUT NOT PAYING TAXES FOR OUR COUNTRY!

The common argument opposing illegal immigration is that the illegals coming to the United States generally "take away" the jobs that U.S. citizens could have. In my opinion this argument is flawed considering the fact that now most employers require proof of citizenship, leaving only run of the mill jobs left for illegal immigrants. These jobs being undesirable to Americans who usually don't want to get their hands dirty(No offense intended, as I speak for my self as well). Also, illegal immigrants are not offered oppurtunities to go to college or universities which also require proof of citizenship. Therefore allowing U.S. citizens oppurtunities to further their education which will likely furthur their career in jobs that most illegal immigrants cannot obtain. This being said, I believe illegal immigration can be open for discussion in this land of oppurtunity, the land of the free; not the land of the "anti-illegals". Being the daughter of two illegal immigrants who earned their citizenship the right way (by applying, and taking the proper assessments), I feel blessed being born here and I feel blessed at the fact that my parents were allowed to move countries to offer me a better future.

Illegal imigration is considered a big problem in a lot of countries but for me its not that bad like it seems, its bad for the illegal people cause they are not treated like they have to, but not for the American society, ( talking in general for all the legal residents ) first off all the main problem of legal Americans is that illegal immigrants are taking away jobs for legal people, that they are not paying enough taxes and that they have more benefits to all this I want to say that its not true. Its very difficult for them to move on in this country, to raise their children and have a better future I think that is what we all want, but they try and try even when bad jobs, low wages and no secure space to live on, they don't take away jobs, they have the jobs that all Americans DONT WANT. Like picking up lettuce and tomatoes with no protection from the sun? Animals, etc? Clean toilets or the dishes with low wage? Do you think that a legal person is willing to do that? The answer is no. They don't pay as much taxes but they also spend their money in this country helping the economy, I think everybody has to have a different point of view with this and be in their shoes for a moment. Not all the things that look bad are bad.

Illegal immirgration is probably, I would consider, the biggest disadvantage that America is facing today. Illegal Aliens travel from other countries and expect to live in the United States without paying taxes and "stealing" jobs from naturalized or natural born individuals. This is also a downfall for the reputation of the United States because other countries might believe that America is "too lazy" to take action and deport the illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants should pay taxes and go through the naturalization process just like every other individual who wants to move to the United States AND wants to do it legally. What is the use of trying to achieve a better life if you break the rules?

I believe that illegal immigration is an absolutely unacceptable issue. Many make the arguement that these people are just "looking for a better life." I do not believe that this type of immigration should be at all tolerated. These people are coming into our country and working for lesser wages than our own citizens, therefore taking away our jobs while our economy is in shambles. Look at all the poverty in the world. Figuritavly speaking, If we took in 50 impovershed people over the course of a year, 100 more are born in that same country. We will never be able to balance out the poverty in the world, and if we continue taking in people from those countries with little consequence for entering illegally, our economy will crumble and we will no longer be a political superpower. Our soldiers fight for the people of our country, they do not fight and risk their lives for the people who come into our country without the decency to do it legally.

I think that it is a big problem and that it should be delt with in a good way that kids under the age of 18 should be able to stay if found out but have a little punishment but if they are over 18 then they should be sent back but be able to communicate with their sons or daughters in the U.S.

Immigration is a major problem to most people of the United States and the world only because they do no understand what the true numbers of illegal immigrants that are present. Even though the GMF survey has revealed the true statistics on how many immigrants are illegal, most people base their opinion on their own racist and xenophobic beliefs. It is true, however; that most immigrants do reduce the amount of jobs that are offered in the economy, but that is no excuse for people to have all of legislation focus on creating laws that lower, or even prohibit all immigration to their country/state. In fact, when legislation lowers the time they spend on immigration issues, there will be many more opportunities for other major problems to be solved like the healthcare repeal bill that is being contemplated. Immigration isn't as major of an issue that most people around the world think, it is mainly only an opinion that is being spread like a disease.

I believe that illegal immigration is a huge problem all around the world because it hurts the economy. The reasons why the economy suffers is that illegal immigrates avoid taxes and they take away people's jobs by working for lower wages. The survey by GMF does not really change anything because the statistics does not show how many are illegal; therefore, all we can conclude is that they are immigrates. But my question is how did GMF survey these immigrates? Moving on to the legislatures, if the legislatures viewed immigration in a more positive view, it would highly affect them because it would cause arguments and issues. For example, the Arizona's immigration law stirred a huge argument whether it was unconstitutional or not. I also believe that elected officials should spend some time on fixing illegal immigration enough to reduce the illegal immigration by half. In reality, it is impossible to completely stop illegal immigration because people always find a way around it.

Illegal immigration is a serious problem that needs to be fixed and highly looked upon at. Illegal immigration takes jobs from hard working citizens that need a job to feed their families. The GMF survey majorly changes things. It shows that there is a high percentage of the people that want or require a step up on illegal immigration. It also shows that people believe that illegal immigration creates a higher crime rate. A more positive view on illegal immigration would highly affect legislation. An official that would want to run would be highly popular and liked if he/she would have a more positive view on immigration. In my opinion, elected officials should spend more time on immigration because it is a serious problem that is affecting countries all over the world drastically.

The threat that illegal immigration poses is not only economical, but moral. In a country where citizenship is something earned, not given out, to have people receive this privilege illegally is a detriment to our economy as they don't pay the necessary taxes as normal citizens do. Coming from a family that struggled to legally immigrate to the United States, to see people reap the same rewards without the same struggle is both immoral and unethical. Though measures have been taken to impede the continuation of this problem, the United States is still vulnerable to illegal immigration. I look to Obama with high hopes and have faith in his ability to remedy this crisis.

Although the GMF survey revealed there were not as many illegal immigrants as many people believed, I still think it is a problem. Considering the economic tension, I consider illegal immigration a big deal. There is only a recorded 14% illegals in the U.S. but those 14% of people are getting jobs everyday Americans can not get because illegals are taking those jobs. Although I would say discovering there are only 14% of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has changed my perspective, I still think something has to be done because there is still that 14% lingering in the U.S. Yes, that is a seemingly low statistic but we can't forget about that population of people completely. America was built on certain principles and foundations which can not be broken by individuals searching for a 'better life.' Officials could try to be more positive about the issue but they can not forget about it completely, this would only lead to a higher statistic.

i believe that immigration is a growing problem in the U.S. i also feel that if we dont start to control the immigration problem, then we are going to be over-run sooner that anyone could be expecting. The illegal immigrants that are streaming into the states are taking good paying jobs from american citizens, jobs that will allow for a massive paycheck are being taken because the immigrants will work for less than an american citizen would.

I think this isn't much a problem in my area.Except there are places like New Mexico,Arizona, and Texas that make people very concerned, but that's because its near the Mexican Border. Its the only way to keep our country safe from immigrants right now,but overall I think it is very judgemental too. Others who are judged by their appearance in that area are very offended and I'm sure anyone would be.A tough decision, but this isn't fair for the majority of America as it seems to be a part of being racist to others who are proud citizens of these fifty United States. Its like Denzel Washington says in Remember the Titans "I don't care if black, blue, white, yellow,or orange",this is a free country for all citizens. And @Colin,if you think about it,14% is pretty much that makes about 1 out of every ten meaning there could be one on every street.
