Do you give to charity?

December 17, 2014

By Jeremy Quattlebaum, Student Voices staff writer

As the holiday season kicks into overdrive, you might be considering giving to a charity to spread more holiday cheer.

You wouldn’t be alone, either, as charitable giving increases during the holidays. The last few months of the year are considered the giving season by the nonprofit community, according to the National Center for Charitable Statistics. A 2007 study by the Center on Philanthropy found that 24 percent of annual giving is made during the weeks between the Thanksgiving holiday and New Year’s Day.

And Americans give a lot. The School of Philanthropy at Indiana University found that Americans gave an estimated $335.17 billion to charities in 2013, an increase over 2012, and approaching the 2007 high of $349.50 billion, adjusted for inflation.

With all this giving, how do you choose a charity or nonprofit? And equally important, how do you know your hard-earned money goes to the right place?

The last question is more difficult because fraudulent charities pop up, and some well-known charities give little of the money they receive for the purpose that they state and instead use the money to pay the salaries of executives, funnel the donations back into marketing and commercials, or cover the costs of running the large and often-inefficient charity.

How do you know if a charity will give the greatest positive bang for your buck?

The first thing to do is take your time when choosing a charity. Most fraudulent charities use a strong appeal to emotions, getting donors to react quickly and not investigate the charity before giving money. These often take advantage of major disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy or the tsunami that struck Indonesia in 2004. If you are inclined to give, the charity should reflect your values. Researching the charity beforehand is a good way to determine if its goals match your philanthropic intentions.

Check the charity’s status and make sure that it is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity. This means that it is registered with the IRS as a charity, and has public tax reports that anyone can access. If you can’t find 501(c)(3) anywhere on the website or in its literature, then chances are it is not really a charity.

The Charity Navigator is a great place to find a reputable organization if you get overwhelmed by all of the charities. The nonprofit organization analyzes the percentage of the money received through donation compared to how much it gives to the intended purpose. By breaking down the dollar amounts spent, a potential donor can see if a charity uses the majority of the donations for the purposes they say, and how much is tied up into the costs of running the charity.

What do you think?

Do you give to charity? If so, which ones? Is it important for people to donate? If you can’t afford to give money, what are other ways you help? Join the discussion and let us know what you think!

I do give out chairtys, but it's the help from my family members. We made donations for the Chinese Orphanage, Lutheran Missionary Funds, and the Arthritis Foundation. It's defiantly important to donate. It helps other people that doesn't have much or do what you can do. It creates a healthier and nicer environment. If you don't have money, you can help out rather than donating for the cause. Everyone's invited to lend a hand out.

I personally do not give to charity but I do think it is important to donate to charity. As long as you know it is a reputable charity and the money is going to a good cause then yes it is very important that you donate. If you cant afford money then a good way to help is give them food or something that would be of great value to the charity. It would mean a lot to them and it makes you a better person all around.

My family and I donate a lot to many charities. We mostly donate clothing and toys to places like the Salvation Army. Most of the clothing is going to children who's parents can't afford clothing.I also do volunteer work at soup kitchens. My coaches influence my treat and I to volunteer to do charity work. I think that is important to donate because there are so many people who don't have as much as we do.

My family usually gives to charities during the holiday season. The charities we usually give to are Toys for Tots because we believe that giving an unfortunate little girl or boy a special something will fill their hearts with joy. People should donate things to charities because it helps the unfortunate and gives them hope. If you don't have any money to give you can also participate by giving clothes and shoes to the Salvation Army or donating food to a food pantry.

I do give to charity. I give a lot of charity to my church, and also a good among to the Salvation Army. It is important to donate because some people do need things that you have too much of. If you don't have enough money to donate somewhere, you can help out around the charity you are participating in. You can also give other things instead of money to your charity if you still want to help out.

I do donate because if I were those people I would hate to be in their position. Some people are starved and have no food and if that was me, I would want someone to donate. Put yourself in other people's shoes before you make a choice.

My family often and sometimes does. We donate a lot of old toys and clothes for the people in need. Donating isn't just money either but we also give in some as well. As long as I know others are not starving to death and freezing cold, I'm happy!

I haven't really given money to charity, but I have done charity. I've given my clothes to the children who can't afford and I've bought food and went around giving it to homeless people who can't afford any. The clothes I normally give away, it's normally small clothes that don't fit me anymore but they go to little kids in Foster homes or orphanages. I also do food drives every once in a while. if you can't afford to give money, you can always give food, clothes, and much much more. you'll be surprised on how much you can do for a person just by doing something so small. especially around holidays, making them even happier around that time, like Christmas:)

I always try to donate to charity if I can. The only reason I wouldn't is if I forgot my wallet, or I suspected it was a fake charity. I like to donate to churches like St. Luke's, or charities that claim to help solve world hunger. There many people in this world who don't even have enough food for a day. It would be heartless to sit back and let that stand! Even if I can't give money, I can simply give my old clothes or some food. We should always try to help those who need it most, and charity can help us get started.

My family and I donate to charities. When my school has fundraisers or other events such as bringing in canned foods for families in need I would try my best to go out and buy something to bring in. I think it is important for people to donate because not everyone out there in the world are as fortunate as other people and it just gives you a nice feeling when you know you have helped someone. I think if you don't have enough money to donate to charity you can simply just spread awareness about it so other people can.

Every year around Christmas time my family and I donate to charity. We give to Toys for Tots and the salvation army things kids would like for Christmas. Its not much, but it can really impact a life. We give stuff like toys, clothes, games etc.. Giving to charity honestly makes you feel so good about yourself knowing you made someone else happy.

My family will often give to charity. Around Christmas in our church we buy items to put in shoe boxes that are sent to different places in the world. Also we put money in the bins when people are collecting money outside of stores. We also donate clothes. If you don't have money to donate you can volunteer at events or places to help people. I think it's important for people to donate to charity because you help people and one day you might need help from a charity.

Yes, my family and I do donate to charity. We usually donate money to other families in need, and donate clothes we don't use anymore. But donating isn't all about giving money, you can also devote your time in running a program to help the less fortunate, such as a soup kitchen. Being able to help donate in anyway to the less fortunate is great either way you choose to.

On holidays I give to charity. My family either waits for people to come to our door and ask for money or we go to donate. If we can't provide the money then we donate some clothes that we don't use anymore. We usually donate a lot of clothes because I always buy new ones. It's important to give to charity because there are people less significant than us. Some people are alone and have no where to go on holidays. Some times we give to the homeless. But most of the time we don't care where we donate. Everyone needs extra help and we give to anyone that needs it. If there's extra change in the house we will give it away.

I do give to charity's. In the winter, close to Christmas, my family picks two names of a a tree(on the tree are tags with children's names on them and what they would like to receive for Christmas). Then, my mom and I go to Target to buy the presents for the two people that we have chosen. It is important for people to donate to charity because we are living in a world where some people do not have enough money for shelter, food, water, etc. It is a nice thing to do and it is an act of kindness. Also, you are helping those in need. If you can not afford to give money, you can give clothing that you have grown out of or food that had never been opened like cereal or cans of food. Also, you can give toys that are in good condition. You can help out at soup kitchens too!

If i had to choose any charity organization, i would have to go with either foster children or disabled children. I want to help kids who probably don't have much inspiration to be what they want because of the challenges they face in life. I want them to know they can do whatever they want, no matter what makes them "different" but they need to know, they arent different.

I do give to charity. My church actually has missionaries sent to Mexico and Africa to donate belonging's that we gave away and help provide better homes. I also go to this even called "Food 4 Life" where we give away free food for people in need. In my perspective, it is important for people to donate because some people just waste their belongings that they could give to others who have nothing. Not everyone around the world have everything like some people. Some have to eat whatever they could find to survive. I want to provide a better life for people who don't have much. I want them to live a happy life because those type of people are mostly great full for the little things in life. Just knowing that they are happy makes me happy myself. If I wasn't able to afford to give money, I would look through all my belongings and donate things that I don't even use or care about anymore. I would also try to volunteer at organizations that help the poor or help orphanages.

I try to give to charity as much as I can by donating my old clothes. When I was younger I would every year my softball team would enter in a "Toys for Tots" tournament. So every year around Christmas time we'd have that tournament and my brother and I would go through our big box of toys to donate a little more than half of our toys. I would just love the feeling of knowing that these toys that I'm donating is for a good cause and that when these children get their new toys it will but a big smile on their face. So even if you don't have the money to donate you can donate something else like old clothes or toys.

I believe I do give to charity as much as I possibly can. Charity work to me can mean many things: volunteering, donating, or just little deeds you do for those in need. I think it is truly important for people to spend a minute of their life just to donate. If you can't afford to give money, you can also help by utilizing your free time to volunteer. I, myself, do a lot of volunteering. I've done the most volunteer work for Children's Foundation of America, which helps local foster children. Also in the past, my family has donated lots of money to those in need around the world. Simple things like donating or volunteering are little acts of nourishment to the world.

I give to charity as much as possible because I know that there are a lot of people out there that need the things that are just sitting around my house a lot more than me. My great-aunt has an orphanage in the Philippines so whenever my sister and I outgrow our clothes, we send it over to the kids at the orphanage. I actually grew up with some of the kids there because I would visit them frequently when I still lived in the Philippines. I'm extremely grateful for being able to have had that experience because it taught me at a very young age that there people in the world that are less fortunate than me and have lives that are much harder than mine. This is why I think it is extremely important for people to donate to charity. If you can't afford to give money, another way that you can help is to donate items that you no longer use and are just collecting dust in your house, like I do.

At the moment, I do not give to any charity but, I would love to start trying that. About six years ago, I gave some toys to a toy drive which, made me really happy. There is probably a lot of clothing or items in our house that we don't even wear or use anymore. For this reason, we could give it to a charity or a Goodwill. We don't always have to give money, volunteering for an event for people in need or like as said before, giving your clothes or items in your house away would make somebody in need, happy.

I give to charity as much as my time, sometimes food to The Salvation Army. I am in a school club called Leo's Club. In the Leo Club, we attend to community events (e.g. festivals, celebrations, fairs) and waste money, so that we can earn more money. By the end of the year, with the money we have earned, we give to charities of our choice. I do think it is important for people to donate because it helps others in need or it simply advances our country. Donating to charity is not limited to only money. You can donate something as simple as your time to the community or your old clothes or toys you do not play with anymore.

Donating to charity shows compassion and humanity. It does not matter in what form you choose to donate, although it is wise to be cautious of what organization you are offering to. Whether it is money, clothes, food, body parts (organs, hair), or simply a bit of your time, it benefits others who are at a disadvantage. I believe it is important to donate at least a bit because even as different interests or groups tear people apart, our belief and human instinct to lend others a hand unite us as one. Personally, I have donated hair to Locks of Love once it is long enough and will continue to do so. I have also donated canned food for my church and money for organizations whenever I can spare some. Charities should be able to answer all your questions or concerns unless they are frauds. If you still have doubt in donating, choose a promising charity and avoid frauds.

I give to charity as much as possible by donating my old clothes to The Salvation Army. I do feel that it is important for people to give to charity, even if it is a little bit. Also, they do not necessarily have to give money, but they could donate food or clothes to local shelters or families in need, like how I give to The Salvation Army. Now, while the people still have to pay for their clothes they are at a cheaper price. Another way to help is by volunteering at local shelters or at toy drives.

It is a civic duty to give to charity and it is obviously for a good cause but I do not give to charity and I should even if it is a couple of cents, it makes a difference and it shows that you care about things. I wish I gave to charity more but I'm just a broke high schooler so maybe when I'm older and have a stable job I will give to charity.

I do not give to charity as much as I want to even though I believe that I should. I believe it't important for people to give to charity even if it's a little because it's a civic duty. Even if you don't have money you can still give to charity by donating food to a homeless shelter or a family in need. People can donate by simply donating their time. Volunteering is a great way to help others and personally, it always makes me feel better inside. If you don't trust charities, donate your clothes to a thriftstore or a Goodwill. Even though people still have to pay for their clothes at these stores, everything is at a highly reduced cost and it is a whole lot cheaper than buying clothes anywhere else.

No, I do not give to charities because I think the money that you have donated might not have gone tot the charity of your choice. It might have been given to some person's pocket who keeps on saying that they are poor and they need money. For example, there is a local temple that my family goes to and whenever we go there for events that are always telling us to donate some money to the temple so that they can make the temple better. But every time we go there is no changes to the temple even though we have all given to the temple.

Giving to charity is a very important thing. Its easy and if you don't have money to give you can give things like old clothes, toys, and canned food. Personally I like to donate to only local charities cause I know because I will know that the things that I am donating are going to a good place. When donating to a local place, it feels like you are giving back to the community.

I give to charity through my church whenever it is possible, especially during christmas. We don't give give to a specific charity, what we do is gather a donation of toys, clothes, food and other items then go down to mexico and give to the orphanages. I think it s very important give to charity because we who have enough money to buy food and clothes and have a roof over our heads tend to forget how lucky we are to live such a good life; giving to charity humbles us in way that we learn to appreciate what we have. Also giving to charity helps the person or people that you are giving to because it lets them see that there are people in the world that are willing to help them and that they should have hope for a better future.

I give charity when I can, sometimes I can not give to the charity because of lack of money myself or I brought a certain amount of money for shopping. It is hard to pass by a person begging for charity while I have none myself. Even the littlest thing can eventually add up and save a child from hunger. Helping people out is an amazing thing to do. Not only donating money, but food that you won't eat, or clothes that don't fit you anymore. This could all help certain people struggling out there. You don't even need money to donate. Yes I do give to charity. Most money that 5k races make goes to a charity. A couple of weekends ago my family and I participated in the Run for the Red 5k. This 5k donated the money earned to the Red Cross. Almost all the 5k's my family and I do, the money raised goes to charity. Also I just did an Irish Dancing competition last weekend and that dance competition was for an Autism foundation. There is a dance called the charity treble reel and my sister and my friend and I all did it! If you can not afford to give to charity, you can still help. You can go to a place such as St. Jude's and ask if you can do voluntary work. Do not think that money is the only way you can help charity. I think that giving to charity is a very important thing to do. By people's help, charities are able to help people who need help. My family donates money, clothes, food and other necessities to my local charity, PATH. I think that it is important for people to donate. It may not seem like it, but most people don't have an easy access to food or warmth. I think once a person realizes that giving is good, their kindness is improved and they have a better understanding for other people. Not all charities need money. My family donates tissues, hats, shoes, and other items. Go into your closet and pull out old clothes you don't wear anymore.By donating these you can brighten someone's days in ways most people don't realize. Sometimes money can't buy the feeling of someone knowing they are protected and cared for.

I have given to charity I haven't given money but I have given my time in helping those in need. I think its very important for people to donate, it helps those who don't have a roof under their head or those who are abused or broken. Giving charity is also important because it brings back faith in humanity. Living in a world where no one cares for anyone but themselves seeing those who take time out of their lives or money or whatever it may be to and to just think about those who are in need of assistance in their life makes the world a better place to know that you just helped that person from freezing you just saved a life and those kind of things impact the world in a good way and raises awareness to other people that being selfish is a thing of the past. If you cant give money you can do a lot more. It could be giving a homeless man a couple of dollars or donating clothes or presents even giving that burger you bought to some one who is starving. The possibilities to donations are endless and its out time to change the world. All it takes is some time even if its 5 minutes. As a race of humans its our obligation to pick one another up when we fall. Plus the feeling that you get when you help someone who needs it is priceless no amount of money can buy that happiness and the impact you could have on that persons life is unimaginable.

I have given to charity and helped by volunteering with charity programs for battered woman, homeless people, and children. I personally do think in a way it is important because I see it as an opportunity to help those in need, if you can and you are well off and you have enough to help others, than I think if you have it in your heart, than yeah donate. even if you don't have the money you can volunteer at charity places, i don't believe donating money is always a big thing because sometimes you may donate other things they may need . you may not need it but someone else might need it . There are many way of donating whether its with money, necessity's, or even just your time.
